My friends cats are urinating and messing in the house?
My friend has 6 cats who are messing on her carpet, even though there is a litter tray there. Her health has deteriorated and she is unable to get down to clean it, The last time she tried to do it she was on the floor for 2 hours till her daughter came home as she could not get up. Does anyone know of any deterrent to stop them doing this and using the tray?

This is a lot of cats for someone with poor health to take care of but I'm not going to dwell on that because I know if it was me I would be heartbroken giving away any of my cats.
First thing first if there are 6 cats then I would suggest getting 8 litter trays. I know this sounds extreme but cats are quite territorial and may not use a litter tray another cat has used.
The floors need to me properly cleaned so there is not scent left. If the cats are able to smell it then they will go there again.
Litter trays should be placed, spaced out, in a variety of places and if possible put in places where you notice the cats like to go. One of my cats had taken to doing his business on the window sill so I put a litter tray there and he uses the tray now instead of the sill. The reason that they need to be spaced out is so that the cats have access to one quickly and easily also if there are many people/cats around certain litter trays they have the option to escape to a more private litter tray.
Another thing that could be done also is to limit the places the cats are able to go, but if there are 6 cats then restricting them to one room is not possible as it would stress them out.
I hope this info helps you and you friend.

Cats are very territoral and easily stressed so when you have 6 in one house it can cause problems. If you have 6 cats you need atleast 6 litter trays no just one. And they need to be keep clean. Accidents need to be cleaned with a product designered to get rid of the odour not just stain as if they can smell it they will keep going back to those spots. Are the cats all neutered as if not that will make it worse.

realistically its not safe for her to have so many cats about when she herself is not able to look after them bad for both hers and the cats health, tell her to contact a rescue centre who should help her house the cats.heartbreaking I know but best for both, once one cat does the mess the others will all copy .she should at least restrict them to one part of the house for the time being. Not sure how you'd stop them now they're used to doing this except for perhaps getting a spray for the areas you wish to protect.
