Can you fine employees in California?

For instance, The warehouse Department keeps getting wrong inventory numbers, most of them turn out to be human error. What's the best way to stop them from making mistakes? Can you fine employees?

the source of the incompetency must be tracked down...then THAT PERSON must be warned if they do not improve, they will be TERMINATED, not fined.

You cannot fine an employee in California (i.e. remove pay from their paycheck to reimburse for error) unless you get their permission EVERY TIME you do it. They can refuse to allow you to take it from their paycheck... and they should refuse.

The errors are either a result of training, poor management, and/or lack of attention to detail (which could be a sign of poor employee engagement). In each case, this is an issue of poorly managing the employees, which includes not giving them the tools to properly do their job and not giving recognition for a job well done. I recommend you increase communication of expectations, find out if the training and tools are appropriate for the position, make sure procedures for inventory are appropriate and followed, ensure the manager of the area is engaged. Once these issues are all taken care of, you can manage them through disciplinary process.

    Best of luck

You can not "fine" an employee.

Take a look at your organization and determine why the mistakes are made. Most likely you have high turn over, lousy training and expect your ware house people to turn out a quota that is too high.

Train your staff properly, better still get suitable staff for the specific role.

Fine employees, are you serious, you should take into account mistakes and losses in your selling prices.

Wouldn't want to work for you. Fine me for making a mistake whilst working for you. Hitler

You will find that rewarding good work is more effective than penalizing bad work. Incentivize making fewer mistakes. Like give time off or something.

generally it is NOT legal to fine an employee, you can discipline them up to termination but you can not take a deduction from their wages.....

a fine is NOT the way to improve performance:

setting clear, realistic, track-able goals IS.....

communication, training, and follow up IS.....

setting goals, and rewarding achievement goes a lot farther then just "slapping" their hands when they fail to perform...........
