How can I tell if a cat has been fixed?

About 6 months ago, someone dropped off 5 kittens, about three months old. Two females and, I think, three males. Four of the cats are black and white and one is multi colored in light colors. That's the best way to describe the last one.

Anyway, I had the two girls fixed already and am going to take the other three to be fixed soon. Problem is, I can't tell if the multi colored one is a male or female. It has long hair and it covers the identification points, to put it politely. One of the black & white cats has long hair and I can see his you know what's.

I know the vet will know, but I need to tell him how many of each beforehand. It is difficult to pick up the cat and start feeling around, I tried, but it starts squirming and wants to be put down.

So, what do I do?

It is easier to see, visibly, if the male is fixed or not. However, with a female, the belly must be shaved to see if there is a scar from the operation.

As for the males, you can readily see if their scrotum is intact. They will be missing, and that "area" will simply have LESS STUFF back there if they have been neutered.

Since you cannot handle the cats much, then you are unable to shave the belly of the females to find the scars.

If you know a pet groomer, you may want to take them to the groomer. They can handle the cats and shave where needed. Otherwise, you have to let it go to the vet to do.

Chances are the multicolored cat is a calico or a tortoiseshell. If the cat is mottled black and orange, it's probably a tortoiseshell. It it has a white based coat with areas of black and orange, then it's a calico. If it has the same colors but the black areas have tabby patterns, then it's a caliby. All these cats are almost always female so chances are that cat is female, too. Even though it has long hair, you would be able to see its testicles if it were a male. The fact that you can't really tell suggests that it is a female.

Don't worry about it too much. The two vets I've talked to (at the shelter I volunteer at) are used to mix-ups like that.

But if you wait until the kitten is sleepy you might have a better chance to get a look.

Tell the vet your not sure what they are. My cats "sister" was getting fixed but it turned out they were all boys.

If this cat has three or more colors it is female.

It sounds like you are describing a dilute tortoiseshell and more than 99% are female.
