Can you vaccinate an eleven-month-old cat?

We just adopted a cat from a friend. The previous owner adopted her from the streets when she was 3 weeks old, and never vaccinated her. She's an indoor cat and has a diverticulum in her rectum which will need surgery, but is otherwise healthy.

Is it possible to vaccinate her at eleven months of age?

Update:

The vetenarian says she doesn't need any, but I'm not convinced.

It would be a good idea to at least get her the distemper vaccine, since that one is very contagious and even an indoor cat could get it from a person bringing it in on their clothes or shoes, if they had been somewhere around cats that had it. It is fine to get it at 11 months. Usually it starts with them getting 1 , then 3 or 4 weeks later they get another one. I'd at least do that initial series of 2. . Then a year later you could get another booster. But after that you are set for years -- possibly even for life. Even the latest guidelines say that at that point it should be given no more often than every 3 years. In other words every 3 years at the MOST. Really there have been studies showing immunity lasts years longer than that.

Rabies vaccination is required by law in many US states since it is something that is transmissible to humans and is deadly. It's not likely an indoor only cat would get rabies, they do have to have contact with an animal who has it. But if she ever bit someone and the person reported the bite and the cat did not have the rabies shot, she could be taken by Animal Control and held in quarantine at your expense for a few weeks. or in some places I think they could even kill her right away so they can find out quicker if she has rabies (in which case the person bit would have to get a series of shots)

Feline Leukemia is not really needed for an indoor cat who doesn't come in contact with other cats of unknown vaccination status. Some people get it anyway on the off chance their cat might get out.

The others really aren't recommended or at least not in your situation.

You can look on the American Association of Feline Practitioners site for their vaccination guidelines.

And here is an article by a vet who's against over-vaccinating, but she's not saying that cats should get NO vaccines. http://catinfo.org/?link=vaccines

You can vaccinate a cat at any age..cats get yearly vaccines..so even cats several years old get shots. If she has never had shots and the vet says she does not need them..go see another vet.

My cat is an indoor cat and I have to give him the rabies shot and a few more every year. Maybe you should try another vet.

Oh my gosh yes, you can absolutely vaccinate her. Just talk to your vet and s/he can tell you what you need to do.
