RAM Compatibility DDR2?

I've been asked to 'tune up' and upgrade a computer that has 2 x 1 GB UNB PC2-5300 Apacer RAM with 2 empty slots. Can I just add any DDR2 and keep what is existing? What, exactly, do I need to get?

You can put any ddr2 ram in but it is normally cheaper if you buy ram that is equal or less than the speed of your motherboards chipset as it will not run at faster speeds, also if you get new ram which is faster than the old modules put the faster ones in slots 1 and 3.

2 gigs in slot 3 will do it, same type of course, no more than 4 gigs of RAM is necessary.

http://www.filesonic.com/file/2271117374I dont know why people are saying getting more than 4gb is good. If any one can name me a game which will take your total ram use above about 3gb i will eat my computer.

Even Crysis + a dvd + the internet running doesnt take my PCs ram usage above 3gb. (try running games and pressing ctrl alt del and going to the performance tab. See how much ram is actually being used by games, you will be surprised)

4gb is a good amount as it is more than you need but ram comes in 1gb or 2gb sticks and most computers have 2 or 4 ram slots so it adds up nicely.

Also look very carefully at what graphics card you are buying, about 80% of a games performance is dependant on the graphics card in my opinion.

look at the highest ram speed supported by the mother board and buy two sticks of that speed. keep in mind that computers work best when the ram sticks are identical. another idea is to look into overclocking if it is possible. keep in mind that for overclocking you'll need a better cooling system for the processor.
