Gun registration and background check in California?

What is the purpose of background check and gun registration in California? To be more specific, can the law enforcement, legal system, or companies use that to my disadvantage?

For example, when you get stopped by a police officer for minor traffic violations, can they tell if I am a gun owner and treat me differently from a non-gun owner before approaching?

When you get arrested for a different reason, say shoplifting, and appear in court, does the judge give you a heavier sentence if you have a gun at home?

During a job search, do government agencies or private companies check if you are a gun owner and decide to not hire you because you seem dangerous to them?

I never bought a gun before. I am interested in buying one to defend myself and for recreational purposes, but I am wondering if that can have negative impacts on other aspects of my life.

Thanks all

Update:

I am not thinking of concealing any gun. Just leaving it at home or practicing at shooting ranges.

I'm from Michigan and somewhat familiar with Kalifornia requirements. Not an expert but there are some similarities.

A background check is performed when you buy a firearm. Felons, people with spousal abuse , dishonorable discharges fro the military, mental health issuesand some other areas of concern are prohibited from purchasing firearms. The check is run thru the BATFE (Bureau of alcohol, Tobacco, firearms, and explosives). They have 3 days to approve or disapprove the purchase(s). If they do not approve it by the end of the 3rd day, you are automatically approved. This is to prevent unwilling political types from rejecting your purchase and making you wait forever.

In MIchiganm, if you get a CPL, CCW ( permit to carry ) the process to get a license goes thru a background check and all you have to do is present your license and you are cleared for a purchase. One good thing about having a CCW/ CPL (Carry Concealed / Carry Pistol License ).

In MIchigan, we have to also register our handguns. They call it a Safety Check but what it is really is registration. I've been advised by the State police that if they come to your residence for whatever reason and find a handgun and it is not "Safety inspected", they can confiscate it. They say the reason is that if the firearm is not registered, they have no way of tracking it in the event it is stolen from you. Whether you believe that or not is up to debate.

In MIchigan, the police have several screens they look at at a stop. One is that if you have a CCW/ CPL. It is your duty to imediately tell the officer if you are legally carrying and what would he like you to do. This helps him put his mind to rest as far as surprises. They do not have means , to my knowledge to determine if you own guns, only if you have a conceled carry license. They also look at screens to determine if you have any warrants for arrest of a felon on the run or on parole ,etc.

If you go before the court, you are not given harsher sentences if you are a gun owner, unless you use a firearm in the commision of a crime. This would be contrary to the 2nd Amendment, the Right to Bear Arms.

An employer does not ask if you are a gun owner. Even the jobs I have applied for that were governemnt related, that question never came up. They are more interested in if you have a felony record or user of illegal drugs. However, I would not volunteer such information to a potential new employer. it is normally not something the company wants to know about you. They want to know how your talents will benefit cause them to increase profits, make more sales, improve quality, and so on. However, the government suppliers I worked for, I found that a greater percentage have a fonder appreciation for firearms. Maybe because they were in the military and can appreciate their use.

Being that Kalifornia is a more liberal state, I'd refrain from mentioning it at all.

Kalifornia is also a state where it is more difficult to obtain assault rifles. They may have banned certain ones. Check into that.

I think you have more fears than need be. But go to a guns store and talk to locals now that you ae more knowedgable.

    Good luck on your purchase

Not really The vast majority of background checks and waiting periods involve licensed firearms which are never used for any criminal purpose whatsoever The vast makority of gun related crimes are committed using unlicensed firearms that were either purchased illegally on the street with no background checks or waiting periods at all or are stolen firearms Ergo- background checks and waiting periods are of little use in preventing anyone from obtaining an illegal firearm and using it to commit a crime All More Gun Control Laws do is make it more difficult for the Legal Licensed Firerams Owner to purchase another Firearm Legally and, in so doing, embolden criminals to commit even more crimes with their unlicensed firearms secure in the knowledge that the Legal Licensed Firearms Owner has either been disarmed or is unable to match the firepower of criminals with unlicensed illegal firearms

for as blown out of proportion it sounds, it's not that bad, and i Hate CA gun laws.

I owned many, never had any issues about legality. Now, getting a CCW, abandon hope unless your donating 25k or better to the Sherrifs re-election fund. That's a valuable commodity and they don't come cheap.

It is very unlikely that they would know you had a gun unless they search you or you tell them you have one. If you are planning on concealed carry, you better have a permit or you will go to jail if they search you and find one on your person.
