Can I remove an active debt from collections?
I just found out that a company sent a bill to collections after I had talked to them about a payment plan. Apparantly they had called to get me to come in and actually sign paperwork over the payment plan, but because I didn't within the next couple of days, they sent it to a collections agency.
Does this mean it is going on my credit report? Is there any way at this point to just pay the debt and get it off my credit report or is this seriously going to be a permanent negative on my credit?

Are you sure they already sent it to a collection agency?
Now, you have to deal with that agency. Not the original debtor.
Collection agencies will rarely accept payments.
If they do they will want all amounts paid in a short period (3 or 6 months).
Yes, its going on your credit reports.
Do you have cash to negotiate a settlement?
Ask here how to do this right. State the amount, and if it's a credit card, installment loan, or one time item such as cable or medical bill. Sometimes you can do a pay on delete on certain types of items.

If the debt was sent to collections, it is likely to show up as a defaulted debt on your credit report. You can try to negotiate a pay for delete agreement with the collection agency. They will want full payment. Not all collection agencies will agree. There is nothing you can do to force the collection agency to remove the item.
Just be sure to get any settlement agreement in writing before you pay a cent. Don't give the collector direct access to your bank account.

Don’t get harassed by bill collectors be calm and address the situation and solve it before it get worse.
Explain your situation in unemotional or professional to collection agency and try to negotiation your debt. be cool and do not give up easily if your creditor denies your request, send email and explain in point wise why it will be benefice for both.
Although negotiating debt is very difficult task for most of the people but if you have will you can do it easily.
If you think you cannot succeed to do it then its better to hire a professional to do it for you.

The quicker you pay it the better.
Creditors are well accustomed to people making empty promises and your failure to go and sign the paperwork logically make the company assume you were one of these people
