How can I train my cat to not walk around the kitchen counter?

My cats are naughty and are constantly jumping up on the kitchen counter to scour it for food. This bothers me because I want a clean kitchen, and an animal that walks around in the litterbox is not welcome on the same kitchen counter where I prepare food.

I clean my kitchen well, so there is rarely anything there other than smells, but they will try and lick the drippings off of the stovetop or dig down into the garbage disposal (obviously, it's not running) to fish out bits of leftover food. Any plate left over from a meal put on the counter to await washing or in the sink becomes a target almost instantly.

They seem to do this the instant my back is turned on them, and scamper off to safety as soon as they see me walking towards them being naughty this way. I want those cats to stay off the countertops! It is a source of nearly daily irritation to me. Obviously I don't want to use a cruel training technique like swatting them, but what can I do to get them to not behave like this?

My cat used to do this. I cured the problem accidentally. He needed a course of foul-tasting antibiotics so had to be scruffed and towel wrapped to administer the pills. I did this on the kitchen counter. The cat will not go near it now.

In your case, I suggest covering the counter with double sided adhesive paper. You can get it at any art shop. If it's a big, powerful cat, rodent glue paper might be necessary.

I have not tried this method but one thing you can do is put a bunch of empty cans on top of the counter along with any other kitchen utensils that will make a lot of noise when they get knocked down. When the cats jump up and knock them down, the noise causes them to freak out and run off. Hopefully, they learn to stay off after this is done a few times.

May be use a water squirting bottle or a small water pistol, something that is not too visibly obvious to the cats, from a distance squirt them a bit from a hidden location, hopefully they get the idea if they are on counter they get a tiny dash of water. The water shouldn't be too cruel just kind of annoying and surprising to them

There is a device called a scat matt that trains cats to stay off things. It is a flat matt that sends a tiny electric charge to startle the cat when it jumps on it. You can get them in varying sizes and they are handy to also train cats to stay off other places you might want them away from like work benches, balconies, and other dangerous places. The electric charge is very low. It is more to startle than to harm.

You might try a product similar to "Sticky Paws".

"Sticky Paws is applied directly to an area on furniture (or wherever you want it) in transparent adhesive strips. This water-based medical grade adhesive, specially formulated for our product, does two things:

it keeps Sticky Paws where you want it by adhering to the surface of where it is placed and

it repels the cats with the tacky feel they cannot tolerate."

We had the same problem with my cats.

Each time you see them on the bench yell at them and clap your hands, cats really hate loud noises. But it seems to me that you have already tried that.

Try sprinkling pepper on the area's that they usually go on. It won't hurt them but it will make their noses sting, and knowing cats who sniff everything they will quickly learn not to do that.

Another way is to lay aluminium foil on the bench, they really hate the feeling of it on their feet.

Cats are very cheeky animals but hopefully yours learn what to and not do like mine did!

Use a water spray, sticky tape or anything they hate. Smell/touch. Vinegar, dirt, water, etc.

you have to swat the cat at least once in a while or else they will not follow you at all.. cats are cute and affectionate but they are very stubborn too.. o.O
