what is the use in awarding a best answer?

The use of awarding best answer:

1. The member who get best answer will be awarded 10 points together with 2 points for answering.

2. i am awarding to encourage members.

3. i know the difficulty of answering a question. A member is taking more efforts to answer a question.

4. The best answer reward taking them to another level in yahoo answers.

5. i never discourage members. i can not give best answer to all the members answered. But, in rotation surely they will be awarded. i am thanking all members.

6. In the religious category too i find every member who float questions is selecting best answers without any partiality. one should not expect best answers often. i am giving answers to many members. i am getting 2 points. i won't worry for not getting best answer because another member gave very good answer than me.The member asking question never see partiality which i know.

7. Everyone giving answers expecting best answer. Getting best answer is a reward for their good answer.

Then, what is the use of to be a member in yahoo?

you are talking philosophy. If you feel no use in awarding a best answer even after reading my answer, please keep answering and please don't come with questions.

i forget to come with another issue. you say a question is getting 70 answers. Yes, it is a good question. The members like the question and answering. Those 70 and above members interestingly coming to answer and not expecting best answer. Do you know? Many times i am getting only a single answer. i am gladly awarding best answer to that answer.

i am glad some members like praveen, Buzzzbe, Khushi madam and others floating good questions and they get good response. i am not jealous on them because my questions will be some times very tough to answer and i can not expect more answers. Many times i get more stars to my question whereas i get very few answers.

If you don't give Best Answer it will go to the vote and we'll have opportunity to have our say. I do see your point. It is just pride really to want best answer. We all like being awarded them now and again but we can do absolutely nothing with the points we earn except that those with zillions of points could sit here all day asking and answering because they can use the site with no limits whereas those of us on levels 1 and 2 etc. are limited in how much we can use the site.

The thumbs up and down are a better idea but these are used mischievously anyway so are not a true guide as to what others actually thought of our answer. The report button is the same. If there's a user who has said something nasty about another user they can look out for that person again and report them for the daftest of reasons to get retribution.

This is not for the seriously minded or easily offended person but, for those who DO use Y.A seriously, it can be very helpful - which was the original idea I am sure.

In Mathematics, there is no Best Answer but only Correct Answer. Many may give correct answer and there also, it is not easy to select the Best Answer.

In R& S category if the asker applies some basic criteria in selecting the Best answer for selecting the BA, it should not be a problem for selecting one among many.

1 Presentation (with Para etc without using much Capital letters, easy to read, and it should be appealing to the asker)

2 The source (must be most authentic)

3 Logic (The answer must take a logical path to lead to his conclusion)

4 Point to the answer ( The answer must not be vague and it should be addressed to the question)

After all, the purpose of the asker is to solicit the best answer.

Even though there are many answers, if these criteria are applied, The Best can be singled out from them.

Many learned pundits are members here, especially in R& S section and their knowledge and presentation is far superior to many others, you will automatically start to respect them for their knowledge and answers, even though they are unknown entity here.

It's always a good idea to do that because asking the question cost you 5 points and you will get 3 points back for choosing the best answer which makes the question resolved. After four days if you haven't chosen best answer it goes to voting and the community chooses. The voting period is two days after that the answer having the most number of votes wins and the question is considered resolved.

true , you gain knowledge by perusing the answers , which is what youre looking for . id be more interested in the knowledge , than the points . but not every one has the same views and goals as you .

by awarding best answer , you gain back 3 points , instead of loosing 5 points by asking a question .

So everyone in the future will take in account which answer might be logical to relate to their own problems, and sometimes when best answer doesn't make any sense, the other answers given are there as optional opinions that do make sense.

You began a question about the best answer and you are asking why members always present in yahoo answers by having more ids to go higher level.Is yahoo presenting any awards for those members gone higher levels?Everyone can sit and play 24 hours. it is not correct to say about others.i agree Aryaji. When you operate your first account, you did not come with faults. In this duplicate account you are coming with lot of questions on doubt.The more ids, TD,TU,etc.,are usual song sing by everyone who are unable to competite with others.you say why a question is getting 70 more answers. who can convince you?

My honest opinion (I am using the word opinion and not answer!) on the points raised in this regard are:

Point 1.What's the point so many people answer....I saw one question with about 70 answers.

Opinion 1.I notice that your concern is on the number of answer; mine is on the irrelevant answers. More answers are better, if they are sincere and to the point. But one can often notice that people making fun of the question by giving vulgar answers, marring the sanctity of the forum. What to do, it has to be put up with when moderators are not efficient.

P2. What's the point in selecting a best answer, which does not make sense because the best cannot be multiple because best is best and its only one, and when the forum is meant for sharing of knowledge ?

O2. While it is true that best can be only one, it is very difficult to get the rating of a perfect/absolute best, for, then, the answer has to have the same appeal to the asker or the voters, as the case may be, which depends upon its appeal to the askers'/voters' acceptance/satisfaction. It is an absolute impossibility to realise this in practice, because "Loko bhinna ruchi: (People have different tastes)Nevertheless, as you have rightly pointed out, as the forum is meant for knowledge only it is better we get more good answers for the subject.

P3.In mathematics section the best answer would go to the person who answers it right but what about R and S ? I mean to say what is the use in selecting a best answer( in R and S) ??

O3. In the case of mathematics, you can only choose right answers, not the best answers. There can be only one right answer in the case of a mathematical problem and that requires no judgemental capability! But in the case of R & S multiple good answers are possible and it is here a judgemental capability is required. Many askers do not know that it is their judgemental capability that is actually put into test and not the answerer's capability to reply. (It is another matter that many askers are thinking that they are examiners, rather than answer seekers and many responders think that they are students answering rather than givers of whatever they have got!! But that is not a big aberration in the case where the end result is good, viz., sharing of knowledge)

P4. Yes I know most users go out of their way to answer the question by leaving all daily work and answering ! that's is very much appreciated with the awarding of a thumbs up ;) what say ??

O4. You hold the right appreciation of the efforts put in by the responders. The awarding of thumbs up is one thing, but the selection of best answer is due to the system of Y/A. If the asker does not select, then voters are going to select. The asker selecting the best has the advantage in the sense that one will get to know whether the asker is satisfied with his/her doubt gets addressed to the best of ability. (This is true even when the asker raises the question imagining himself/herself as an examiner). But the disadvantage of asker awarding the best answer is a possible bias towards a familiar person or the contact. But by and large, in R & S section, the askers' awards have been fair, though I must admit, I will be wrong if I do not state that in a very few cases such a bias is certainly suspected. But it is unavoidable because of "Loko bhinna ruchi:" and we have to only get satisfied with a by and large best (?!) aspects in a system and not expect an absolute best! In the case of allowing the voters to choose, it becomes somewhat democratic, but the asker's mind is not known.

Point 6; To all :suppose i ask a question about brahman ..some one comes with answer with full quotes from the upanishads and then one person comes and answers "Ram" which answer will i select as best ?

Opinion 6: We know that Brahmam, Ram, Shiva, and whatever name that people revere with faith and good motives are one and the same. Therefore, it reminds me of the famous proverb "A rose is a rose, by whatever name you call it". But still you have to select an answer as best. That answer will be, that which supports a nuetral name, not because the upanishads say so, but because the purport is nuetrality even as per Bhagavtgeeta.

Awarding best answer to one member and other members feel partiality, i guess one or two members.i was also under confusion like you and then i decided to let it voting. i let out my all questions for voting except some very interesting answers. i let out voting exactly after one hour. The most respected late Radhakrishna sir said not to let out voting immediately. He said this ''Mr Kumar do not let answers go for VOTING IMMEDIATELY.Read the answers and and you will learn seeing a thing in different angles.it is your RIGHT to select Best Answer.If you are not reading the answer , why shall we ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS? As an elder it is my suggestion please''. From that day onwards i let out voting after several hours or one or two days. i am selecting best answer also if i feel good.you can also let out voting or select best answer.
