Do you worry that tech support people will think you are the dumbest person they've ever met?

I always felt that way, but I now know there's someone out there a little bit dumber than I am.

Tech Support: "I need you to right-click on the Open Desktop."

Customer: "Ok."

Tech Support: "Did you get a pop-up menu?"

Customer: "No."

Tech Support: "Ok. Right click again. Do you see a pop-up menu?"

Customer: "No."

Tech Support: "Ok, sir. Can you tell me what you have done up until this point?"

Customer: "Sure, you told me to write 'click' and I wrote click'."

Update:

So many great answers. Thanks to all of you.

    I'm not worried because they already know.

    The Geek Squad at Best Buy has a poster

    on the wall with my photo and the caption;

    "Do not attempt to explain to him what he

    did wrong or how you fixed it. His eyes will

    glaze over and you'll have to drag him to his

    car."

    Yes. My son used to be a tech support for a popular computer company and he said after a day at work, he really needed to find a way to unwind and "shake" the stress from 8 hours of trying to explain effectively and calmly to people who are weeping, swearing or practically suicidal-attempting to learn how to use the new computer. I can relate to their frustration.

    I think of that when I need help with a new cell phone or anything for that matter. I try to study the handbook BEFORE I call for assistance so I have some knowledge of the terms used, anyway.

    When new terms meet old heads sometimes things just don't click!

    Here is a poem to celebrate all those seniors who are wrestling with technology and getting there very well:

    The computer swallowed grandpa.

    Yes, honestly it’s true!

    He pressed 'control and 'enter'

    And disappeared from view.

    It devoured him completely,

    The thought just makes me squirm.

    he must have caught a virus

    Or been eaten by a worm.

    I've searched through the recycle bin

    And files of every kind;

    I've even used the Internet,

    But nothing did I find.

    In desperation, I asked Jeeves

    My searches to refine.

    The reply from him was negative,

    Not a thing was found 'online.'

    So, if inside your 'Inbox,'

    My Grandpa you should see,

    Please 'Copy, Scan' and 'Paste' him

    And send him back to me.

    Source(s): Apologies, don't know who wrote it.

    Tech Support:: “What does the screen say now?”

    Customer: “It says, ‘Hit ENTER when ready’.”

    Tech Support:: “Well?”

    Customer: “How do I know when it’s ready?”

    I once tried to get support from my internet provider, and as others, I got Andrew on the line, and the farcical conversation revealed that neither of us could understand what the other was saying!

    That's cute. My oldest daughter is tech support; I hear lot's of stories, so, I know I'm not the dumbest person a TS ever met.

    My ex-husband is a software developer, my sister is the IT project manager for Compuware...and I'm just a lowly "user" (who is also a medical transcriptionist). Whenever either one of them would get all frustrated and uppity with me about my obvious lack of tech knowledge...I would just say: Oh yeah?...well, we all have our own unique abilities...can you spell 'esophagogastrojejunostomy' without using spellcheck? That usually shut them up.

    BTW: The Yahoo spellchecker told me that esophagogastrojejunostomy was spelled incorrectly...but "conveniently" didn't have any suggestions....lol.

    Hahaha!

    No, I have talked to a lot of tech support people and when I don't get it they say that's ok, that's what we are here for...

    Janet, I am like you, computers are still a mystery to me.

    On the other hand, that tech that is helping you out probably can't count past 10 without a computer to aid them.
