Teaching English to a Kindergartner?

I'm tutoring a kindergartner who doesn't speak a word of English. I speak her native tongue, but I'm having trouble deciding how or on what to start. Her attention span is not very long, since in fact it is tiresome sitting and learning.

1. Should I teach the ABC's first? She doesn't know the letters, not in English or her language.

What order to do them in? I heard it is wise not to do them in order. True?

Any advice?? Any websites for resources?

With young children it's best not to "teach" them explicitly. Far better is to simply sit and play with them as you would do other children but speak English only. Of course you'll understand what they say and if there's an urgent issue (e.g. the child needs to go to the toilet) then you can explain in their Mother Tongue if you need to... but ideally you won't.

In a very short space of time you'll find the child will respond to your English and start to speak back to you in English. You can prompt this later on. The link below explains more.

You don't explicitly teach language to a kindergartner. You do what good parents do with their kids. You sing the alphabet song with her (the order is much easier to remember with a tune. Why wouldn't you teach them in order? She needs to know the order). You play games with cut out letters or letters on blocks. You look at picture books with her and point to and say the words. (Richard Scarry has a book with the pictures labeled in multiple languages). You put some pictures on some cards and the words on others, and play a concentration game with her. You talk to her and model language with her. You could play a game with pictures of food or even real food items where she has to ask you (with one or two words) for the things she wants- play grocery shopping. Kids love to play at doing the things their parents do. You have her draw pictures to illustrate vocabulary words.

There are lots of good songs for kids.

Head, shoulders, knees and toes, for example.

The Bear Went Over the Mountain

Row, row, row your boat, etc.

    Books with rhymes. Dr. Seuss.

You can try eslcafe.com for lesson plans, although they are not mostly for younger students. But there are lots of resources on the web. Search for ESL kindergarten lessons.

I would teach her the alphabet and some basic phonics. Maybe you could get a nice picture book with phonics too. http://eslinsider.com/how-to-teach-english-videos/...
