Hardwood floor in a 2nd story addition?

We added an addition to our house about 10 years ago. The bottom floor to the addition is the dining room and the 2nd floor is my bedroom. Part of the bedroom is in the original house and the other part is the addition. Under the carpet we currently have there is a layer of plywood.

I want to rip the carpet out and a put in a new hardwood floor.

Is this possible since the addition flexes due to the seasons??? Can I cover up the uneven spots with a rug or should I lay a couple layers of plywood over the existing plywood to make it even?

Any help is appreciated.

You can lay hard wood on the floor as long as its flat. So do what you have to do, ply wood, sand the floor, use fillers to make it flat. Or all the above, what ever it takes to have a flat smooth floor.

I put in my homestead a 5/sixteen hardwood made by potential of Bruce Hardwood. it fairly is a pre-finished product. It is going down relatively speedy. no longer as speedy as Laminate. I actually have a Retriever and there are some scratches. The varnish isn't as stable as what i predicted. I refinished yet another room that the floor is 40 six years previous and utilized a extreme-gloss end. The extreme gloss has extra sturdiness than a gloss. there are no canines scratches on the extreme gloss. The hardwood can be replaced and or repaired plenty extra convenient than laminate. I even have put in the two varieties, and characteristic repaired the two varieties. i visit refinish the 5/sixteen this autumn after 5 years of two childrens and the canines.

Most important is to make sure floor is flat.....I have laid hard wood flooring as a builder many times. On uneven floor I put down hardboard glued not screwed or nail as they can come through later with expansion and contraction of the existing floor....then put down flooring with hidden nail gun or you can depending on flooring

type you are using can cork edges for expansion and contraction as per manufacturers recommendations. Flat floor very important...there are some really great click hardwood flooring around that just float on the surface and will within the range of the D I Y guys...but beware of some of the cheapo stuff....buy good quality

floor to start with. I refused one lady a job, who bought a very expensive flooring, the click variety, it would not go together as was bowed beyond belief .... I went to the DIY store and got one guy in flooring to try to click it together....sweating, he could not do it! It may be how it was stored?....but useless.

She got the order revoked and I went with her to buy a much cheaper click hardwood flooring from somewhere else. Note I do not mention names.

The whole house done in that flooring!!! Customer was very happy!

Now semi retired from building work. Also knee pads help!

    Hope this helps you.
