This hasn't happened to my sink before?

So I was disposing of leftover food today when the water started backing up. I turned the water off, then tried the disposal again and it just turned off. I reset it, tried manually moving the blade, but the water is still standing. Now the disposal turns on, and sounds fine, but the water is still backed up.

What can I do?

NEVER use "drain cleaner" because ALL IT DOES is clean the money out of your wallet.

And if you, or someone else has to take the trap off, THEY CAN GET BURNED FROM THE DRAIN CLEANER.

Before getting out the plumbing tools, try a plunger first. Start with the disposer off and turn it on if the water starts draining.

Before going to bed, pour a little drain cleaner down the disposer followed by a small amount of water. Let it sit overnight and flush it well with hot water the next morning.

If you have been pouring cooking grease down the drain, you should find another place for it. I pour it over weeds and grass along a fence. It is biodegradable but kills the weeds. Worms eat it when it soaks into the soil.

possibly a clog in your p-trap, get a bucket and put it underneath p-trap to catch the water, disconnect the p-trap, theres a union on the p-trap itself and a compression fitting above that is attached to the sink, make sure that piece is free of debris and then hook it back up, if that didn't fix it try a plunger and push the blockage further back, pipes always connect to bigger pipes

Try Drain cleaner according to instructions first, Second, using a flashlight to see if the chopping propeller is working when turned on. a motor can work but if the propeller is disconnected it won't work. Third, the elbow(trap) in the drain may be blocked..so open it over a bucket and clean it out.
