Heathrow closed just with the threat of snow but Government support this action, why?
Heathrow closed some hours before the snow fell and then it was only three inches. I think every airport in Europe was operating normally. It appears that the BAA (Spanish owned) couldn't run a party in a brewery. Some Government Minister one Justine Green jumps out of the woodwork to support them, why ? I worked at Heathrow for many years and never saw a fiasco like this.
kathy I was in the airline business for many years and what you quote is typical BAA bull*hit which they have been practising for years. How come European airports were operating in far colder weather and with heavier snowfalls ? Maybe a little action and less rhetoric would help !

All down to the God of elf and safety I suppose. Thank God it wasn't last Sunday as my niece went back home to Australia. She was looking forward to a bit of snow as well. Daft girl. After seeing what the majority of arrivals were, the only bright spot is that `they' wont be able to land!
As this country is subjected to snow from time to time, airports in this country should be prepared and have had enough time and money to build runways such as they have in places around the world that gets more snow than we will ever see.

heathrow spokesman said... heathrow runs at 99% capacity which means all runways in use at all times .to make it easier to keep runways clear it was decided to cancel a few flights so they can continue to work on an unused runway. when one is cleared its available for use, the clearing team can then work on the next one, so keeping most runways clear. if all flights carried on, they wouldnt have been able to clear the runways. that makes perfect sense to me. other airports do not run at full capacity so they are able to clear the runways when no planes are on them. all this has nothing to do with government. its all about common sense and it worked. most flights continued safely.

Weak government, dumb people and cowardly companies. Other countries have snow that is far worse than here and they still move on in life. What is humiliating is that we are becoming wimps, when I was younger things were very different.

What else did you expect from this useless government with a clueless Tory at their head?
