I have heard that no Canadian debit cards work in Cuba.

There are ATMs in Cuba - but only for Visa cards. Visa and Mastercards can be used for cash advances over the counter at banks.

I just got back from varadero last week and was lucky to visit Havana great city you will love it. While I was there I did not see one ATM around in Havana, Varadero or the airport. My tour guide from transat and nouli tours said that there are a few ATMs in Havana but the thing is most of them aren't well keep like in Canada so you might get one with no money in it. Also the machines only allow you to take low bills out and you have a limit of how much you can take out. My advice to you is to just take cash I took around 280-300 and that was way more then enough. Also if you are going to take a credit card make sure it's a Canadian visa my master card did not work even tho it was threw bank of Montreal just cuz master card is an American company. One more thing don't bring or tip anyone with Canadian coins they are useless there and you can't get them changed or anything and remember to put aside 25 cuc for you to be able to leave the country. Have a great trip stay safe my friend.

Keep in mind that, while there are several ATM's in Havana, you can't rely on them at all. First, if your debit card does not have the Visa or Mastercard logo on it, you cannot use it. I believe TD does have a card bearing this logo, but I'm not 100% sure. The only one I know works for sure is the CIBC Advantage Visa debit card.

If yours has one of these logos, be prepared to pay up to 15% in fees associated with debit withdrawals. You are also putting yourself at an extremely high risk of having your card compromised and your money stolen. Call your bank and let them know you intend to use your card in Cuba. If your card gets eaten by the ATM, you're out of luck. The card is gone until you return to Canada.

There is no logical reason to use a debit card in Cuba. Cash is, and always has been, king. Havana does require a little more cash than the resort towns, because there are no AI hotels. If you are staying in a hotel, keep your cash in the room safe. If you are staying in a casa, put it in your suitcase and lock it. You don't need to carry large sums with you anywhere.
