Is it legal to secretly record private conversations in the UK?
Could one, for example, use such a recording as evidence of a false allegation has been made against him/her?

Between two private individuals it is not prohibited to record conversations. The problem arises however, if that conversation is then provided to a third party for whatever reason, without the consent of both parties. Consent can be obtained retrospectively or by arguing it to be within the publics interest. As an example, reporters frequently record conversations covertly, but their defence is that the content is in the public’s interest and should be disclosed; in that knowledge of the recording would alter the content of the conversation significantly.
A thin line is tread here and many court battles have ensued to determine what is, and what is not, considered in the public’s interest. Injunctions are the most effective option available to the recorded individual who believes recordings have been made without consent, along with any claims for damages flowing from it.

Depending on the purpose of the recording. In your example, the use of recording conversation is for the evidence of false allegation made against another person. Your purpose alone is PURE EVIL because you will use the recording for a nefarious purposes.
The purpose of recording conversation is for other people intentions. For example, you are asking for a visa in an Embassy of your choice because you are going there, naturally you will be interviewed by an officer of that Embassy and while you are being interviewed, you happen to record the conversation just for curiosity and in the middle fo the conversation the officer in question, suddenly shift the topic to sex and demanding that if you like to have a visa you need to sleep with this officer. An immoral proposal. The tape recording of the conversation to the officer in question is questionable and can declare it illegal in the sense that the recording has no permission to the officer. But the outcome of the recording is very much favorable for you because you have recorded an illegal purpose of the officer.

There are many cases in the courts at the moment about this problem.
It is a very dicey situation to deal with. Done privately to prove infidelity, or fraud etc., one would be safe i would assume. It would however be safe to employ a legal agency to do such things for you.

I would think it would matter what the nature of the recording is, and in what manner it was obtained, In the states, the other person is supposed to know they're being recorded to be admissible, but many judges allow them anyway. If they're truly damaging allegations, most judges will allow them in the states.

you are able to record what you want - yet with out the fellow's consent it isn't usable in any problem. It comes lower than entrapment. besides, take income - pretend you do not recognize he's there and recording and ask actual one of your collegues if she's terrified of snakes as there is one contained in the workplace. ..........And watch what you say. The boss received't imagine pretty of him for bringing particular conversations to his interest. Bosses recognize finished properly that they get spoke of as at the back of their backs - that's portion of the territory and universal. Having to take heed to it would want to have made him sense uncomfortable and he will resent the burk for putting him in that position.
