How do I train my dog to eat his treats in a certain spot?

I want my dog to go to his bed in the basement to eat treats, like rawhide bones. That way he's not eating them on the carpet or where the baby can interfere with him. I've already got his feeding dishes and his bed in the basement. He knows sit, down (as in lie down) and stay. I'm going to begin working with him on "place" - so that he knows his area is his bed in the basement and to stay there when I need him out from underfoot.

Update:

Wow Jenny Manyteeth - you just showed your ignorance when it comes to home designs. Not all homes have a basement that is a cold cement block that no one visits or a door that shuts if off from the rest of the house. Our living room, kitchen and dining room are one large room. I don't want him in here when I'm cooking because he sheds. Do you want to eat dog hair in your food? I also keep the baby out of his eating area so that he does not feel harrassed - on the advice of our vet. How about adding something intelligent to the conversation?

Update 2:

We weren't planning on getting a dog until the baby was older. But a friend's husband abandoned her adn she had to move into a small apartment and could no longer care for the dog. It was either we take him or he go to a shelter.

Update 3:

Cookie - I take it from your answer, then, that the place command (probably will be bed) will work? To just give him the treat and tell him to go to his bed?

Sounds like you have it covered. What do you want from us?

Why not simply close the door to the basement when you want to keep him down there?

Using "place" will put him there, but you will need to add "stay" for him to stay there.

As to shedding, all dogs shed and those of us with long haired dogs learn how to live with it. Kind of like a "badge of courage".........LOL.

It probably would have been a good idea not to get a dog with a baby and you wouldn't have to solve this problem.

I agree with Gina. If your biggest problem is getting him to go outside in a particular spot, you're incredibly lucky! The only thing you really can do is keep taking him to your designated spot and giving him a TON of praise and a treat when he goes in the right place. Accept that "accidents" in other parts of the yard are probably inevitable, but if you keep taking him to the same spot, eventually that spot will have the strongest scent, and he should start going there on his own.

Why not just shut the door and toss his food down there, too? If you don't want the dog to be part of the family, give it to a family that will.
