How can I get my 18 month old to eat more meat?
He has a genetic condition and he needs a supplement called carnitine. Carnitine is also found in meat, with the greatest percentage found in beef and then pork, but it's not found in vegetables. His specialist has told us that among other foods he needs to eat meat regularly but the little guy just refuses. I've tried cooking it every way I can think of but with no luck. I was wondering if someone might have some ideas that maybe I haven't thought of. He has all his teeth except for his last 4 molars so chewing isn't really a problem. He really needs to be eating meat or I wouldn't worry yet.
Hi Ivy! Long time no read!! Yeah, I've tried meatballs which happen to be one of my favorites with no success but it's been a while so I'll try again! He refuses to even look at a hot dog lol! Thank you!
These are great answers. I hadn't thought about shredded pork or putting it in his mashed potatoes though! Supermarket time!

Have you tried meatballs? My guys like meatballs because they are soft. We cut them in half so they are bite sized. Also very convenient for us! We get the store bought ones. They are softer than our homemade ones. I know he has teeth, but he may still prefer the softer texture.
Have you tried hotdogs? Not great to have daily, but they are meat, and you can get all beef ones. Some kids who don't like meat still like hot dogs.
My guys love meat so we don't have to "hide" them in anyway. They do prefer meatballs and hotdogs to say pieces of steak or a hamburger though.

Carnitine is found in plenty of fruits and vegetables. Apricots, artichokes, asparagus, bananas, beet greens, broccoli, brussels sprouts, collard greens, garlic, mustard greens, okra, parsley, kale, buckwheat, corn, millet, oatmeal, rice bran, rye, whole wheat, wheat bran, wheat germ. Also, if he's drinking milk, he's getting a bit over 7mg of carnitine per cup. All dairy products have a fair bit. Eggs, too.
Whoever is telling you that carnitine is only found in meat is not well-informed on dietary issues. I suggest you find someone else to consult in regards to this issue.

Hi there,
Sorry to hear about your sons condition :(
I have only one thing to say that is extremely beneficial for the welfare of your son regarding meat intake.
Beef is now considered one of the major factors in the development of stomach cancer & should therefore be given in moderation.
Pork, Chicken & Fish are by far much better for you!
Best of luck! :) x

have you tried using ground beef or pork, use stock and puree it...then add it to foods he will eat??? Cooking up ground meat untill it is small and crumbly, add ketchup or sauce, add it to stuffing, mac and cheese. If you puree it you can make mashed potatoes, use puree instead of milk and butter.
Hiding it in foods, instead of trying to get him to eat it plain, maybe he will eat it. Then work on trying to find something he will eat.
I have a very picky eater..I find if I try something for a few days and he wont eat it..wait a few weeks, and try again..sometimes he will eat it.
