Typically, in the U.S., what is the cost per month for city water and sewer?

I know it varies area to area, and depends on your individual usage, but I'm just looking for an average figure.

Update:

Just wanted to say thanks so much for your answers. We are moving (in CT) to a street on the town utilities, so I was just curious how badly this would affect our budget.

I pay 3 water bills each month, My home in the Big City includes water and waste water = $17.00/mo. for minimum usage. My workshop in the neighboring town includes water and wastewater = $27.00/mo. for minimum useage. My Country Home (100 miles from the city) includes water only = $42.00/mo. for minimum useage. The minimum is 2000 gallons for all locations. There is no way to figure out the rate schedule for useage over the minimum, because the price per gallon is not consistent. In other words, if I use 4000 gallons, the price is not double, it's 3 or 4 times the cost! This should turn out to be an interesting survey, I'll keep track of your answers for the next several days to compare the figures. My location is the Houston, TX. area.

I own a 2nd home in Brigantine, NJ which is an island near Atlantic City, NJ. They have their own water supply and sewer system. It costs $185 for sewer every 6 months and water is $140 every 6 months. Most municipalities charge for those services by the quarter ( every 3 months) but Brig does it semi-annually.

An average figure throughout the U.S. would be about $30.00 to $40.00 per month. California is the notable exception -- they pay more like $60.00 to $70.00 a month on average.

However, as you mentioned, a lot has to do with where you live and your usage. If you're on a septic and well system you don't pay monthly fees -- but you have to have your septic tank cleaned out on a regular basis and you usually have to have a water softening system, which can run anywhere from $2,000.00 to $10,000.00.
