B&A: If you are what you write, then...? + Note?
B&A: If you are what you write, then...? + Note?
Hey guys
Well I came along this quote:
“You are what you write.” ― Helvy Tiana Rosa, Risalah Cinta
and it got me thinking, if this is true, then what does it make you? It's an open question, so interpret it as you like, be as realistic as you wish, as nonsensical and hopefully as creative as you wish :)
BQ: What was the last song you listened to?
Note: Also, some of you may remember, about two years ago (wow, time goes fast), I posted a question about the B&A Anthology following the B&A Yearbook. The B&A Anthology is a collection of stories that characterises the users and daily soaps that go on in the forum.
For example, two years ago, when the trolls kicked off with the annual summer fest of ugliness, we knighted Beautiful Nightmare and Lily White troll slayers, and so we have the story Anwen Knight and the Trolls.
I won't make any excuses, I've only completed the first draft of Anwen Knight, so I'm sorry, but Kelly had the idea of 'The Life and Lies of Books and Authors' which Lyra so nicely described as:
"A collection of vignettes by each user. They could all be fictional or non-fictional accounts on different things, opinion on things like trolls, perspectives on different users. So you learn about the users and about B&A through each separate vignette."
So I was wondering if any other users wanted to contribute to this part of the anthology in particular, and if you did, just stick it in the reply box in
booksauthors.wordpress then and .com - I would write it all together but then Y!A plays up
and I would be eternally grateful. There are excerpts on there too to give you a better idea. Or perhaps if you wanted it to be secret until the actual release of the book then we could work something out.
Thanks :D

Then add

to the end of the link
This is when I really begin to hate Y!A I'll just put the link at top of my profile. *Humphs*

If I am what I write, then I'm pretty damn awful! That aside, I tend to write either realistic and/or historical fiction, but am currently trying to write fantasy and action stories as that's what I prefer to read, I'm just not as good when it comes to writing them! That means I'm either old-fashioned or have no imagination, I guess! And I suppose, from this point of view, then we all are what we write: whether or not our characters are author inserts, somehow, whether it's the main protagonist, the antagonist or even a minor character, some of our own traits find their way into our characters. I know people will say "but I don't base my characters on me, that makes them Mary Sues" but the truth is that even little things that we don't consciously think about that belong to us become part of our characters too. It's what helps us relate to them, become attached to them, and ultimately helps us to write better from their point of view. So in that sense, I suppose we are what we write.
BQ. Please don't hate, but seeing as it was Friday the 13th, I just had to go and watch "Friday" by Rebecca Black to leave a Friday 13th-related comment. Please don't judge me, I normally have better taste in music than that!
Oh. My. Goodness. Two years already! I remember the B&A Yearbook and Anthology. You're right, time really does go fast! I was a newbie back then, trying way too hard to act like I'd been there for years when in actual fact, it set me back further and just went to prove how much of a newbie I really was! I think, or at least hope, in the last two years I've matured. But during the yearbook summer, I probably spent every waking moment on here waiting for something else to pop up! And this has given me an idea for a very short little one-chapter story, which I will probably never get round to writing! But I would definetly do it if it could be part of the wordpress thingy...anyway, good luck with the B&A anthology!
Edit: I just went and looked up the Wordpress page. Then nearly died of excitement when I saw the "School Days" page (that was the one I remembered, the one I would stalk the site waiting for more answers for!), and died a little more when I saw myself listed there. Anyway, I forgot to say earlier: Happy Friday 13th everyone (or at least, what's left of it. Which, where I live, is an hour and 15 minutes).

Hmm, I'd interpret the adage: "You are what you write," the same way I'd interpret the phrase: "You are what you eat." It reflects your lifestyle/beliefs/morals/personality and isn't meant to be taken literally, in my mind.
So in that sense, I'd agree with it. The way I eat and what I eat is a reflection of my lifestyle (when I'm lazy I eat take out, when I'm health conscious, I eat fruits/veggies/home-cooked meals, etc). Similarly, when I write fantasy, I'm addressing topics that otherwise wouldn't be well-received unless they were introduced under the guise of whimsy and fun (fantasy). When I write historical fiction, I'm saying something about that particular era (or people's practices). So I'm being reflective.
It would then be safe to say that I'm a manipulative, and introspective person. lol. The themes are always a reflection of my personal thoughts on a subject. If I was writing about Redemption, I might choose various subplots that others wouldn't particularly find fitting as a "redemption" storyline. It is my personal outlook on it.
I also have ulterior motives when I write fantasy. I use allegory quite a bit to offhandedly point a finger at real-life people. I also aim to change how generic high fantasy (as a genre), has become. I manipulate people into expecting an escapism story but what they get is something more reflective/thoughtful than what you traditionally find in that genre.
So again, I'd agree with this.
BQ: I can't remember the last song I listened to. I hardly listen to music. I'm around kids too much nowadays that I value quiet...a symptom of getting older, I'm sure.
BQ2: I think it would be an interesting endeavor to write about B&A users.

I didn't know I was a dystopian novel!
Whoo hoo!
(Sorry, don't think I've ever said "Whoo hoo!" in my life before).
Erm... yeah, I guess it's true to some extent. I do mimic the mood of my books so if I were to write a scene that was very depressing, I'd probably carry that weight with me until I write the next scene. I travel with my book, if that makes sense.
But I don't think that we're confined to just one aspect of writing. Writing is about experimenting, I think. Or, there's a fair amount of experimentation within novels. And some writers just decide to write something new and something that they've never done before.
So, if I'm not taking the quote literally and I don't turn into an eighteen year old teen, then I agree with it.
Some part of me seems to think that we are our book. (Wow, bet that didn't sound mental).

Hmm that's a good question... My stories have always been about someone who is misunderstood and someone who is trying to find out what the meaning of their life is, so I guess that kind of defines what I feel like sometimes...
BQ: "Waterloo". I found it on Youtube, a version sung by the cast of 'Waterloo Road'. =)
Ha ha wow that is awesome Jay. I've even got my own section. Did I ever tell you you're brilliant?
I'll definitely come up with a part to add in for you. It will probably be at the end of next week when I get it done, I have exams that I should be revising for, bit I will definitely do it! Can't wait to see the finished thing.

At this point, copyright infringement is my guilty pleasure. A friend and I just started an (unofficial) novel adaptation of the video game EarthBound. Such a criminal... OQ: You should get him help. Depression isn't an easy thing to talk about, and most people are embarrassed with the connotation of the word. I know you know him well, but depression changes people. You need to get him support, from others and perhaps even professionals. I hope the best for you and Seth, Nicolette.

It's similar to "You are what you eat," so I take it as meaning what you write reflects your general outlook on life.
So in that case, I would be a pretty dark person. Manipulative, inquisitive and twisted in the way I put my characters in situations - the majority being painful either physically or mentally - and seeing what they do.

I would be a flying ship captain who can operate weapons at deadly speed or a delicate wizard girl who can't do a thing for herself. I would also be a slave that escaped and was taken in by a thief lord but then also a princess who knows nothing about reality. YAY!
BQ: Deliver Us - Prince of Egypt. Yes, I am that cool.

Hm, I'm a whole lot of different things. I'm violent and suspenseful. Full of action, fantasy, and in some cases a mystery. I'm mediocre grammatical structure and spelling. I am Times New Roman Font.

If I am what I write, then I guess I'm a vampire, sasquatch, yeti, angau, eskimo, warrior...
I could go on.
BQ: It's called "Joanna". It's by Watashi Wa. I really doubt anyone here has heard of them.
