Would you say that German Wehrmacht during World War 2 was the strongest army in history?

It took combined army of Europe, US, Soviet Union, and other small Allied nations to defeat Germany, not to mention that Germany still held off for few years. (Italy surrendered in only 2 weeks, lol)

So can we say that German Wehrmacht was the strongest army in history?

I would probably have to say yes.

Yes, ok, they did lose the war to the UK, US, Soviet Union, Canadians and what not. But there are definitely strength in numbers.

They were the best trained army in the world at the time - because that was their policy - rearmament. Britain, the US, Russia and co. did not follow strict Military state rules.

Russia had millions in their army, the US had their unlimited amount of Sherman tanks but they would have been nothing if Panzers and Panther tanks were the same in number.

I am British, but the German Army was mighty. Its proven that their kill ratio was the most superior due to their intense training. Look at how many Casualties the Alllies had compared to the Axis.

Germany lost 8 million men in WW2.

    Austria - 120,000

(Not including Italy and Japan as they were not the Wehrmacht.

Britain (and her colonies) - 3 Million

    Russia - 26.6 Million

USA - 0.5 Million - They entered in the latter stages of WW2

Obviously not the most condsidering figures but they tell the main story.

I suspect that some elements of the German Army in WW2 were highly trained and ruthless but eventually they were beaten. If they had been supported logistically by the huge amount of hardware the Allies were in possession of I do believe Germany may well have won the war. If they had invaded Britain prior to the involvement of the USA we would have succumbed. Their invasion of Russia was a serious error of judgement by Hitler.

Well, you did well until your Luftwaffe was almost completely destroyed in the Battle of Britain by the 'little' Royal Air Force, then it all went a bit pair shaped for you didn't it? BTW, that happened BEFORE Russia came in or the USA came in. A few little BRITISH built Spitfires and Hurricanes soon put a stop to any more monkey businesses.

So no, you took all of your enemies on at once, and lost. Don't try to even compare it to Ceasers Rome or Alexander's Greece... The Wehrmacht got it's botty kicked in a very short time, where all the other empires stood for hundreds of years.

Italy didnt surrender. Italians rebelled against the dictator and after they killed him switched sides. Now yes i would agree that Germany had the strongest military in history. They would have won too if Hitler didnt attack Russia so soon. The Russian wheather and Russian popuoation was too much for Germany. I mean Russia lost around 20 million people and still had bodies to fill the ranks.

They lost, only one nation managed to conquer the modern world, the British Empire. It's a toss up between the Romans and the British. BTW Britain has won the most wars in the history of the world, France 2nd, Austria 3rd...

I would say the roman legion was the strongest army in history.

They were able to conquer most of the known world.

And they did not have that much soldiers.
