Getting a job with a Congressman?

Would anyone know how a person goes about getting a job with a Congressman or Senator? I've been looking on several members websites, but there doesn't seem to be any information on it.

Would it be one of those things where you should volunteer for them for a while and then you might get asked? I was just hoping that there would be a more direct way to apply...

That would be a federal job, and as such, you'd need to apply through the official Web site, http://www.usajobs.gov/

And yes, if you're young and still in school, being an intern would be the best way to start. If you go to your representative's official government Web site, there should be some sort of link there showing how to apply for an internship.
