With so much sugar in Gatorade Prime 01 Pre-Game Fuel, how can this be good for you?

Started working out about 4 weeks ago and once I started reading the labels on energy drinks, there sure seems to be a lot of sugar in these beverages. Is this in there for energy boost, or just to make it taste better? In a ll honesty, I would rather have a beer.

Alcohol dehydrates your system, so is not good as a sports drink.

The sugar in sports drinks is to provide fuel for your body as well as make it taste better. For people who are trying to gain muscle mass, or those who are trying not to lose muscle mass while working out, sugar is a great thing to have in your sports drink. The extra calories are absorbed quickly into the blood stream and provide fuel for your muscles. This prevents them from having to breakdown to provide energy for motion.

If you are just trying to lose weight, you can mix your sugared sports drink with water, or try the low calorie versions. Though the lower calorie versions won't help you much in your workout. Adjusting your over all eating habits makes more of an impact on weight loss than the sports drink you are using.

Another alternative to sports drinks is coconut juice. It is better for you, and contains vital electrolytes. It also costs a little more. You can also try drinking just water.

Honestly, if you aren't about to run a marathon or play a game of football, they aren't. You don't need that much sugar or electrolytes. While its great for hard-core athletes (and even then, there are way better sports drinks) most people drink them instead of water, or before mild exercise.

If you were going to run a race, you would need all that sugar. Its there for fuel. But for most people, almost all of that sugar gets turned into fat.
