Driving with a rifle not in my name?

So since I'm 18 I can finally go to the range on my own. However the rifle is still in my dad's name and I was wondering if there would be any legal issues with me having a rifle in his name without him there?

All legitimate answers appreciated

Update:

Oh and yes I am in CA. :P

Guns aren't in anyones "name" take it to the range and shoot! As long as it has not been reported stolen you are ok.

We're lucky here, there are three ranges we can go to at 16 on our own, they are way out in the sticks but I like it that way.

The answers you have been given are correct. I also live in California and can tell you for 100% fact that you'll be okay so long as the gun is not reported stolen or meets any of the other prohibitions in California.

PS. the rifle isn't "in" your dad's name unless he did a voluntary registration through th CA. DOJ. Now, that being said. YOU ABSOLUTLY CAN NOT take your Dad's registered "assult" rifle out to the range without him. Be sure that's not what you're dealing with and you'll be fine.

What do you mean "in his name". Even in the Police State of California rifles are not required to be registered and can be sold privately.

Basically all of my guns are registered under my dad's name and I live in CA too. You will not get in trouble at all. If they ask you, you simply say the gun belongs to your father and he has let you use it to hunt or shoot. There are no legal issues as long as your father has acknowledged that you can take the gun to use it.

It shouldn't matter whose name the gun is in. If you do happen to get stopped they will run the serial number on the gun and as long as it isn't reported stolen you will be fine.

As long as you explain the situation and do not have any felonies, you should be okay. Make sure you can contact your dad if necessary.

um unless it is an "assault rifle/weapon" i put that in quotes since what cali classifies as such either do not exist or are misrepresentations ...but i digress....

back to my point NO such thing as long gun registration in ANY state on continental US...HI is ONLY state that has long gun registration....

so unless it is an "assault weapon" then you will be fine....

if you can legally possess firearms there shouldn't be a problem.

however, if you're in one of those "stupid" states like CA, NJ, MA, IL, etc, there could be a problem, ask the local police about it first.

I think you would have no problems, just get a signed signiture or something, maybe you could just hide it in the car
