Travelling to Cuba (American living in Canada)?

Would an American, like myself, be able to go to Cuba if I fly out of Canada? I live in Canada and my friends want to go to Cuba since it's so cheap to go there. Would I be able to go there at all? If I can, what would be some conditions I would need to follow? Thanks so much!!

Update:

Of course since I LIVE in Canada, all my money being spent there would be in Canadian dollars, so technically I wouldn't be supporting the Cuban economy with US Dollars

You won't have any problems going to Cuba. They welcome everyone including U.S. citizens. On your flight you will be given a visitors permit to fill out. One half of this is taken on entry into Cuba, and the other is taken on exit. Your passport will not be stamped. Cuba dose not want to cause problems for anyone that may travel to the U.S. by stamping a Cuba entry stamp on their passports. Living in Canada, you would have the usual Canadian restrictions. If you travel to the U.S. don't take anything with you that you bought in Cuba such as Cuban cigars, rum, Che Guevara T- shirts, or shirts that say I LOVE CUBA. You can change some of your Canadian currency to the convertible peso at your resort. Just do a little at a time for tipping money. Once you leave Cuba, the peso becomes worthless. You can save them for your next trip or cash them in before you leave. You can tip using Canadian currency until you change your money, but don't use coins, they are worthless to the Cuban people. They can not change them to Cuban currency. Here's a web site where you can get some helpful tips for Cuba holidays. http://cuba-junky.com/

Allen has it just about spot on, the only thing that I would add is that you CAN use a credit card as long as the first 4 digits signify that it is a Canadian bank. Funny thing is that my credit card is drawn on an American bank (Citi Bank) BUT it is through its Canadian subsidiary and there were no problems. What we do is bring a couple of hundred dollars CDN for tips and sundries and if we go on an excursion we pay for it with the card. So far no problems.

A word of caution about Cuban customs it can be quite intimidating (at least it was for us in Varadero) just give them your documents and they will give you back what they don't need. You will need to pay the departure tax at the airport BEFORE you leave Cuba which should be about 25 CUC and lastly bring a Timmies mug to keep your drinks cool at the resort.

have a good time and safe home.

You can not go legally but you already know that. You, personally spending Canadian currency vs. US dollars is irrelevant to the legality of the issue. On the other hand, I suppose that your Canadian friends could "pay all your expenses" and you could claim that the trip cost you nothing.

As you probably already know, you will not receive Cuban stamps in your US passport so the your government will never know you were there and there should not have any problems.

    Now that we are done with that;

GO! Cuba is an amazing place and you really need to see it. Stay away from beach resorts and other gringos; go run the streets of centro Havana. Meet the Cuban people & see how they live.

Apparently Americans don't have a problem going to Cuba as long as they fly out of countries other than the US (e.g. Canada or Mexico).

The money spent in Cuba is CUC - neither CDN nor US dollars. US money is garbage to Cubans anyways, so that is a non-issue.

There is no embargo, in Cuba, against Americans, and no laws forbidding entry to Cuba. It is a one-sided, American law. Cuba will not stamp your passport and credit cards drawn on US banks cannot be used there, so there won't be any paper trail that the US government can use against you.

    Enjoy!

I have never went myself but yes you can fly from Canada, alot of americans do that when they want to go there. I wouldnt say you were american just to be cautious but from people who went there they said they like Canadians going there because they are nice and bring them things they cannot get inside their country like schools supplies for the cleaning crews' children like notebooks , pencils ect.

The only place id take precaution is if you went of your resort ,if you were planning to go to a resort. And maybe say you were Canadian..

Ps: Cuba is actually getting better and letting their citizens have freedom ,contraire to the other ignorant fools spitting nonsense.

As usual, the comunists spill their propaganda trying to fool people

You can travel to Cuba, but you shouldn't, unless you sympathize with the comunist government

I know plenty of Anthropology professors who go all the time. They have to go via Canada.

I don't think you wanna go to cuba. They are very poor and they are ran by a communist government. No one there has anyright not even their own citizens. You can't juat go and buy somthing there the government has to pick somthing for you. I really don't think yoy should go. In Canada Iv heared many stories of americans going and they get randomly jailed for a lifetime. The other day a American Journalist was arrested in Cuba for nothing. All he did was bring a computer with him. Its not safe.
