Is $580 too much for a car tune up?
I been trying to get quotes on a tune up for a Ford Focus SES. 2 companies have quoted almost $500+ for a tune up. Is that reasonable? How often does one need a tune up in their car? The last time I had a tune up was August 2010 and I remembered paying only half the price so was shocked to hear the $580 quote. Please let me know.

Way too much. A tune up generally consists of new spark plugs, belt(s), fuel filter, oil filter, and oil. What they probably want to add on to that is transmission flush and filter, power steering flush, brake system flush, radiator flush, and fuel system cleaning. Maybe new timing belt. The smaller one shouldn't be much more than $100 if they don't do the belt(s); maybe $200 if they do. I do everything on my vehicle myself and a general tune up minus the belt is about $50 getting everything from AutoZone.

Most cars today with their electronics do not need "tune ups." So if they are charging you that much just for a "turn up" then you are being ripped off IMO.
Now, if they are doing oil, all the filters, radiator and transmission flush, new belts and hoses and other rubber parts on the engine, then that is a reasonable price as the parts alone would run half that.
Better find out just exactly what is covered in this tune up.

I drive my own vehicle for about 60,000 miles per year for a living and I never, ever take my vehicle in for a tune up. I have the plugs change every 100,000 miles along with the belts and hoses, but I don't just hand my perfectly fine running vehicle over to anyone for the mysterious "tune up." You're being ripped off.

Oh sister did they ever see you coming! take a look at your owners manuel fer christ sakes, does it say anywhere in it to tune it up? No! its says to change the oil and filters at a certain interval, and if it has a timing belt to change that at a certain interval also, other than that there is nothing to tune up on a modern vehicle, I suggest you read your manuel and follow it to the T and quit letting auto shops rip you off.

Seems very high to me. I guess it depends on what they are going to do. Modern cars do not typically require a tune up until 100K miles. At that time you most likely will just need new spark plugs and wires along with fluid changes.

$580 for just a tune up? WOW!!! can I have the job and I'll do it for $500. I hope they are doing more than you are telling.

sure is...
NEVER use the word 'tune up'
If you are not having problems don't do anything.
See your owners manual...
most time you just need an air cleaner, possibly new plugs. $25(?) oil change...$25.
