Christians!! How do you tell if God is speaking to you or it's mental illness? This is a real question!?

To start with I'm bipolar. (With some possible autistic leanings that don't matter right now...) I'm coming out of a pretty bad depressive episode and feel myself warming up to the possibility of trying the Christian thing again. I've poked my head in my old church. (They actually effectively asked me to not come back but that was a long time ago and it's completely turned over... I don't think they remember...) So... how do I know God is real and talking to me or if I'm going manic and it's all in my head? Is there any objectivity you use when determining this? What would you do if you didn't trust what goes on in your head?

Update:

I don't mean audibly talking to me...lol... (although I have had psychotic symptoms before...)

@antie During a Bible study about tithing I basically told them the doctrine was crap. and the next message was "It is actually reported there are differences among you" and how not believing in tithing was such a big difference. Ah good times...

Update 2:

You can't just believe any voice you hear. You are more likely to end up listening to a demon.

God has given us his word, the Bible, so we can know with certainty the things God has said and the things God expects from us.

The first thing we need to do is come to God in the Name of Jesus and receive the gift of forgiveness of sins and the Spirit of Christ, asking Jesus to come into our heart, so we will have the witness of the Holy Spirit in us, to help us discern the difference between right and wrong, truth and error.

The Holy Spirit is God, and he inspired all the writers of the Bible, and He alone can help us to clearly understand the words and the ways of God.

listen how God spoke to this man when he was near death, and directed to the word of God:

Half of the time I get the impression that people are listening to their own conscience or making something up in their mind as to something that they "feel" God would want. They make a jump and decide that God told them that thing. Then they go and tell someone else that they feel God is telling them that "xyz..." or they tell people they have a "word from the Lord" or a "word of prophesy" or some other phrase that means the same thing. The problem is that often the thing that these people "felt" so strongly is not true or never comes true. But if it really was God speaking to them it will ALWAYS come true. What these people do is misrepresenting God. That is a very serious thing. In the Old Testament times if a prophet ever prophesied things that didn't come true they were supposed to be stoned to death. Saying that you heard God's voice when you didn't was that serious. Anyway, the way to tell if it was really God speaking to you can usually only be done after you see the results of the message. If the message creates peace, joy, patience, and love, you know it was God speaking. If it creates negative results it wasn't.

You ask a good question and especially if you have bi polar symptoms. After God showed Himself to me He inspired me to become a Registered Nurse and work on psychiatric units in hospitals. So I know all of the signs and symptoms of every mental illness and I didn't have any other symptoms so I could not have been mentally ill at the time.

I hope you know that one of the keys for you to stay stable enough to stay out of the Hospital is to develop a friendship with a friend or relative and check out with him any experiences that you have.

Unless thinking is a form of mental illness.

Saying that God talks to Christians is the same as saying I just remembered a scripture. It's a theological metaphor.

you have been set unfastened, you purely could grab that actuality with the two palms and not enable circulate. examine the guarantees of God, examine how lots He loves you, and say it out loud on a daily basis, the devil is making you think that he continues to be on top of problems with your existence, and that's a lie. you're below new administration. Get into the Bible and study what in element of actuality.

Good question! John wrote, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God." Remember Jesus said, "By their fruits ye shall know them." If what God is telling you is going to make you a "danger to your self and others," check thoroughly to make sure it's scriptural. (One reason for reading the Bible daily.) Otherwise, you're good to go.

Research on autism has revealed that it actually involves heightened sensitivity. Logic tells me that you, then, might be more attuned to God's voice than the average person. So, enjoy! Quietly. "Wise as serpents, harmless as doves." ;)

Source(s): If you live exuberantly, there will always be someone who thinks you're crazy, whether you mow a sick neighbor's lawn, hit the gym at 5:00 a.m. every day, or thank God for every blessing.

"They actually effectively asked me to not come back..."

Why?? That's horrible! I hope it wasn't because of your mental illness ... I wouldn't return unless you are confident they wouldn't judge you again.

"How do I know God is real and is talking to me or if I'm going manic..."

Well, rest assured; God rarely talks to anyone audibly - and when he does, you'd expect that he's capable of satisfying your doubts ... Also, you have your church leaders (if you can trust them) to have counsel with to see if it is indeed the voice of God.

...but be wary, even Satan can masquerade as an angel of light, so if what you 'hear' contradicts the Bible or assumes to have authority over what the Bible says, then you need not pay attention to it.

Simple! If God is speaking to you... it IS mental illness!

To be real here, if you feel relgion will help strengthen and carry you then I hope you find your place in it. Unfortunately, if you are truely hearing voices I would speak with your doctor.

    Be well.

HELLO?? What sickos would give me thumbs down? This is where theists really tick me off. God does NOT speak to people, if she is hearing voices she needs to see her doctor.

You are encouraging her to IGNORE SIGNS OF MENTAL ILLNESS! What is wrong with you people?
