Why were George Washington's teeth made of wool?

I remember a rumor that was going around a while back that our great forefather G. Wash had teeth made of wool. Is this ture? Why were his teeth gone in the first place?

Washington had neither wool nor wooden teeth.

President Washington lost his teeth at a relatively early age. He suffered from poor dental health throughout his younger years. He had two sets of false teeth (dentures) made by the most prominent American dentist of his day, Dr. John Greenwood. They were carved from the finest hippopotamus ivory and gold. One of the sets was donated to the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore, the oldest dental college in the world. The dental school in turn loaned one of the dentures to the Smithsonian in 1976 for a bicentennial exhibit.

Wooden teeth were used in Japan during Washington's lifetime but never were used by him. He had teeth made from ivory, reported to be from Hippopotami.

Washington had weak teeth because, like most British colonists, he drank tea, which contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by the body with calcium, which if not obtained in the diet will be extracted from the teeth and bones. The teeth become weak and split.

Over the course of his life he had Ivory teeth and porcelain teeth. The Ivory teeth were carved from Rhinoceros and Elephant Ivory.

Contrary to one response, Dental Hygiene WAS around in the 18th century and it is recorded that Washington used "tooth powder" every day. His teeth bothered him all of his life and he noted several times in his diary exactly what he was experiencing from the problem.

    Wood, not wool!

False teeth then were often carved of ivory, or wood. His teeth would have been gone for the same reasons as others - rotted away.

Washington never had false teeth made of wood. One set of dentures was made of ivory and tea and wine stained them. Some took those ivory teeth to be made of wood, they were not, just stained.

Dental hygiene was non existent in the 18th century. President Washington's teeth were made of ivory if I remember correctly.

They were made of WOOD! That's the best that they could figure at that time.
