Why are religions generally so preoccupied with sexuality?

This has always confused me. Reading about the horrible things this sentiment breeds: a couple was stoned to death in Mali for premarital sex, people are denied proper education about std's and contraption, homosexuals are assaulted and denied rights, and many other bizarre and inhuman behaviours. Why? Why do religious codes feel compelled to make sexuality a bad thing, to make certain acts punishable by death?

    Tons of reasons:

    1. It invokes a strong, immediate, visceral reaction. It riles people up like nothing else.

    2. A good way to exercise social control over a group is to exercise control over their sexual behavior.

    3. The best way to indoctrinate the next generation is to get them at birth, so integrating your beliefs into the family unit is an invaluable tactic.

It is true that many religons go to extremes (as you point out in your examples above). It is also true that in the bible, while the israelites were under the mosaic law, they were not tolerate certain sexual sins, (with certain ones being punishable by death). However, today christians are not under the mosaic law, hence executing an adulterer for example is not a sanctioned activity, and would bring about gods disaproval. With that being said, the bible does present clear guidelines that christians are required to follow. For instance:

    1 corinthians 6:18

8 Flee from fornication. Every other sin that a man may commit is outside his body, but he that practices fornication is sinning against his own body.

    1 corinthians 6:9, 10

9 What! Do YOU not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men, 10 nor thieves, nor greedy persons, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God’s kingdom. 11 And yet that is what some of YOU were. But YOU have been washed clean, but YOU have been sanctified, but YOU have been declared righteous in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the spirit of our God.

Since these standards are set in the bible, and true christians believe the bible to be the word of god,

true christians are merely upholding the divine standard. Beyond that, though, Im sure you can see the wisdom in upholding such standards. The rampant spread of sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies, along with the emotion turmoil have been the result of the promiscuous lifestyles of many. Furthermore, certain practices, seen today as an acceptable alternative to the traditional man/ woman union go contrary to the way our bodies were created. I could go on here, but the point is, that these standards stand as a safeguard for mankind, just as any loving parent would put appropriate/beneficial safe guards in place for his childeren.

(Isaiah 48:17) 17 This is what Jehovah has said, your Repurchaser, the Holy One of Israel: “I, Jehovah, am your God, the One teaching you to benefit [yourself], the One causing you to tread in the way in which you should walk.

Lastly, jesus was on earth, he was not hostile to those living out of harmony with the bible standards, but rather he urged people to repent, and lovingly showed them the superiority of the divine way

Its "Contraception" not "Contraption". What SOME people do in the NAME of religion is not an accurate representation of the actual religion. Plus I can guarantee you that STD's are FAR more common in people who sleep around with everyone and his brother than they are in people who are chase. There is a direct correlation between the rise in "Free Love" and the rise in STD's. And you also have the much higher rate of STD's in the Homosexual Community than the Heterosexual Community.

I received a proper Education in preventing STD's and pregnancy, and I'm a religious person. So that part of your argument is moot.

Besides it is more Human to resist your animal urges than it is to give in to them.

Because religions were created by people, not deities, hundreds of years ago. Back then, people were way less accepting- slavery was okay, child labour was no big deal, interracial marriage was frowned upon, and there was certainly a problem with homosexuality because they didn't understand it. So, they decided to say it was wrong.

Easy question: Because if you can control the sex life of a person you can control ALL aspects of that persons life. The rest of dominance over them is a cake walk.

    James 1:27 KJV

"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

  • It's all about control. The leaders, the alpha males have to control somebody to be happy and then they "train" someone who believes by repressing sexuality, they're doing good for humanity.

Because anything enjoyabel, they want to rip away.

When the bronze-age fools invented the bible, they did to gain power as "spiritual leaders" and they try to make people guilty so they will obey. And they try to deny them knowledge to subjugate them.

It's a great way to control people.

By controlling their sex lives you control a potentially liberating and essential part of human lives.

    It's about control and power.
