Glock 17 gen 4 or XDm 4.5 9mm?
The gf and i were at gander the other day and while she is 21 i hqve about a year till i am and shes already decided on the Glock 17 Gen 4 as it felt, in her words "incredable" in her hands. I held it as well and damn was it nice, and theyve pretty much fixed its issues so im not worried about that. My problem is.. i cant decide between the G17 Gen 4 and the XDm 4.5 9mm becquse of several reasons:
The glock is near invincible, and im really only intending on buying one handgun for a long time so longevity and extreme durability is a plus. And while the XDm is constructed similarily (with the difference in magazine construction as the glock has polymer coated steel and the XDm only has steel mags) im not entirely convinced they have the same reliability so id be nice to get some opinions from those that have handled both.. what are their pros and cons each. And ive also considered a glock 22 gen 4 for its ability to swap the barrel and magazine between, .357 sig and .40 cal chambering which would be a plus but not entirely needed unless im up at my step dads land, so some experience on the G22 would be great to hear about as well.
As a disclaimer though, im jot going for a compact one because it will be something im not going to be conceal carrying unless in winter as most places i got during the summer are places that ban concealed carry here in wisconsin. And while i may only be 19 currently, i prefer to get as much knowledge on this before im 21 in a year and a month. If i left out anything ur confused about let me know and ill add some more to this. Thank you
EDIT: i forgot to mention that ive heard the glock really doesnt care what type of environment its in, but the XDm hates water.. and while i wont be fireing either under water.. its still a comforting notion if i could as i spend a lot of time on my dads two boats, and while wisconsin's water is unswimable most of the year, id be nice if anyone can offer their experience when it comes to reliability in each gun when it comes to water, both when submerged and/or filled with water regardless of quantity of water. Thank u

Both excellent handguns.
The gen 4 Glock only needs a barrel swap between 357 sig and 40S&W, magazine is the same.
The Glock is incredibly tough, I own a few and love them.
On the other hand the XD's are quickly showing that they're very reliable and accurate.
I would say it comes down to the feel and the way it shoots for you.
I'd recommend renting them at a shooting range and getting a good feel for them.
If this is going to be your only gun for a while, you owe it to yourself to ensure that it's perfect for you.

Every gun I purchase, I take a day before I even think about shooting it FAMILIARIZING myself with it. Everything about it I mean, practice inserting and removing magazines, loading and unloading magazines, locking the slide back, releasing the slide, field stripping and reassembling, over and over. When you go to the range the first time, you can then act in a safe manner with your new purchase. Nothing makes folks next to you at the range nervous like fumbling with something you apparently don't know how to use. I would strip it down and clean it at least once before you shoot it, just so you know your firearm intimately. Spend a lot of time target acquiring, practice shooting (no ammo just squeeze and release the trigger so you train your muscle memory without the surprise of recoil), all that good stuff. Then when you go to the range, you'll look like you've done this all your life. As far as cleaning it once you're used to it, I clean my pistol every time I shoot it, as it does primary duty as my home defense tool. If it's something you rely on, cleaning it every use insures fouling won't cost you your life, and that also gives you the chance to inspect it often for signs of damage and wear.

Only one Glock is rated to fire underwater. Any pistol will fire if it is out of water long enough for the water to drain out of the barrel(about 1 second). The Springfields have a grip safety so that they will not fire if you bump the trigger and are not holding it correctly.

i'd say the XDm because of the external safety system being more than just a modified trigger (like a glock).
