Another Texting Mystery!?

Hello, All!

I am a baby boomer and, yes, I confess to being a bit clueless sometimes about the things, like "texting," that everyone else it seems have long taken for granted. Alas, I am still loyal to my fountain pen and monogrammed stationery but I do want to learn.

What does it mean when a colon precedes a capital letter, for example, :P or :D? My teenage nieces use such terms in their email correspondence but I'm too embarrassed to ask them what it stands for.

Oh! Those are smiley faces! If u look at :D sideways, the colon is the eyes, and the capital d is the mouth! Same with the other one but the capital p is a mouth with a tongue sticking out! Hope this helped! :P
