Possible Hand Broken?
I woke up this morning with severe sharp, shooting pain on the pinky side of my right hand. It was slightly swollen. I have since taken Aleve to reduce the pain, but it does still hurt, and as I am right handed, and my job involves a lot of typing and handwritting, it's not helpful. I can still type, just slowly as it hurts. Could it be broken? I didn't do anything aside from cleaning and scrubbing floors yesterday. I can move my fingers, but gripping is excrutiating. Any advice? Please, I'd really like to hear good news and not have to go to my doctor!

I'm an ER nurse. Can you move you're pinky sideways? Away from your other fingers. It would be helpful for me if you could record the extensions of your finger that hurt. Upwards, downwards and if any adjacent fingers hurt in the process. Also, if you have any idea how you initially injured yourself? If you only registered the injury after sleep, do you sleep on your side or in a position that may cause you to rest upon your hand?

Your hand appears to be sprained and not broken. Rest it for a day or two and wait for the swelling to go down. You may have damaged the soft tissue, but if it was broken you would not be able to move it, as things need to be connected to move. If the swelling and pain has not reduced within a week, visit your GP/ a doctor for advice and an x-ray.

It's not broken if you can move it. I can't think of why it would be swollen, maybe your not drinking enough water and your just swollen from so much salt and not enough water. And your experiencing a cramp that needs worked out. That's my only guess. You could have hit it on something in your sleep and didn't even realize it.

It shouldn't be broken if you did nothing to make it break. You should defiantly get it checked because it could be something more serious than a fracture, like a thrombosis.
