I made my barbecue sauce too spicy!?

I added too much red pepper. What can I add to it to cool it down?

You need something that will neutralize the capsaicin (hot component of peppers), which is usually dairy products. The lactic acid in milk, cheese, yogurt, etc., helps neutralize the heat. You can also try adding something like a bit of honey. The sweetness kind of offsets the heat as far as your tongue is concerned. Or, you can try putting slices of lemon (peel and all) into the sauce for an hour or so. The citric acid will leach out of the lemons without adding too sour of a taste, and help neutralize the capsaicin.

You can't really take the heat out.

Brown sugar, molasses etc are all fine in barbecue sauce. They won't cool down the spicy heat.

You can start over but not quite from scratch. Use small portions of your spicy hot sauce season a new batch of barbecue sauce. Freeze the left over in ice cube trays or small containers and use it to season more BQ sauce, salsa, a sweet and hot sauce for chicken wings or chili.

    I'd Honestly Start Over.

You Can Add Spices But You Cant Take Them Out. You Could Try Molasses, but if it were me i'd start over again and watch the pepper.

Throw a little bit of brown sugar or molasses in there. Sometimes a little ketchup will help too.

More ketchup or brown sugar, even molasses is good in it.
