How to prevent hookworm?

Our dog was diagnosed with hookworm and it cost $80 for the medicine. What could could we use besides heartgaurd to prevent it from happening again?

Hookworms can be difficult to treat. I would stick with the medicine your vet recommends. I would not trust cheaper meds from department stores that do not require a prescription. However, it's often cheaper to buy pet meds (such as Heartgaurd) online from places like 1800petmeds.com. Reputable online pharmacies will need a prescription for this medication. Your vet will probably be cooperative about furnishing the prescription. Beware of cheap pharmacies that don't require prescriptions. They can be located overseas in places where the authenticity of meds, as well as the freshness, can be questionable.

Wal-Mart, Petco, and Petsmart all have de-worming medicine that you can use monthly to keep him worm-free. I know the one I buy at Wal-Mart is about $3.00 for a small bottle and $10 for a big bottle and it's for hookworms :)
