no, do not try to calm your cat. A cat will calm itself by itself. They hate fuss and would rather be alone. Our 1st cat, who is 9yrs old now, is called Spooky. We named her that as she was black, very tiny with these massive green scardy eyes. She would hide or jump at any sound and did not get on with other people too. Sometimes if we had friends over, she'd hide under the bed and you would never know we even had cat. She would still do this now and would prefer to take herself away somewhere secure and quite, preferably dark too and relax in peace with on one around. This is a very normal cat behaviour to be fair. They learn to tolerate us as owners but why should they want to put up with others they do not know? Cats are independent and do not need or seek out friends, they work alone in the wild and are happy in their own company. Leave your cat be, he'll run off and hide if faced with other people, do not let anyone torment him either, just let him chill quietly and you will never notice he's there and he will not cause a fuss.
