How do I return extremely overdue library books?
I have 3 books that I took out from the library... nearly 6 years ago!!!! I'm moving house and came a cross them when packing up my room. How do I go back and return them without making it awkward? I would like to get rid of them because my tastes in books have changed (I was 11 when I borrowed them), and I would like start using the library again, but I'm sure they won't let me take out books if there are 3 already 6 years overdue! Any suggestion or help would be great! :)

After 6 years, the books are likely no longer in the library's system. They've already been labeled "Lost." Just take them in and tell them you found them in a box when you were moving.
When my dad passed away, we found library books on the shelves in his den that had been checked out over 20 years ago. There was still a check out card in the back, with the due date stamped on it. The librarians were happy to have them back and didn't even bat an eye.
Since you're the one who checked them out, and you want to use the library services, I suggest you make restitution. However, whatever fines they request shouldn't exceed the cost of the book. My library has maximum late fees not to exceed the replacement cost of the book.

I haven't been back to my town library for about 10 years because I borrowed a book for a friend and she lost it and I obviously couldn't return it and neglected to let the library know (being a young teenager at the time). My mother borrowed a CD under my name which also resulted in a large fine so it put me off using the library at the time. I have recently wanted to return to the town library but not returning the book or paying the fine made me feel quite guilty but if I remember rightly records are destroyed after a number of years, 3-5 and if you really wanted to return the books you could return them anonymously through the drop box.
The library will be pleasantly surprised to receive the books and they should have no information on the last person to check them out as it was so long ago and due to space allowance, something like library check outs is not information that is important to keep for future use. They should have replaced the missing books already and the ones you return may be placed in the boxes of free books they do these days with old copies.

Depending on where you are going you may be lucky and be in a new Library system and therefore need a new card that won't register the old account. Some systems have revamped and have allowed books that are over a particular number of years to be removed from a persons record. Mail them back and apply for the new card in the new town.

i think of they could in all likelihood forgive the positive after 30 years. The e book could be so out of date they do no longer even prefer it anymore. My library has a "cap" of ten money, so books that are way late could by no ability collect extra desirable than a 10 greenback positive. I as quickly as decrease back library e book that i could had approximately 5 years. It became into on time administration!!!! between the chapters gave suggestion on the thank you to locate time to do all those little jobs and errands that get pushed to the returned burner..... the girls on the library had a huge snort over it. It made their day!

The library usually has a drop box outside the library so you don't even have to go inside the library. And after a certain amount of time I believe they cancel payments or library card, not 100% sure.

I would drop them off and not make a big deal about it. You don't even have to make face to face contact, or grovel, or give excuses. Drop them in that big box outside where the library goblin lives, and he will take them inside and put them back on the shelves. The next time you go in you CAN bring an over-sized check (like the ones they hand out to sweepstake winners). That or you can never show your face there again, and live out your days in shame and ongoing booklessness.

They will have written those books off a long time ago, there wont even be a record of them or probably even you, will just have to join again, dont bother returning them.
