Does anyone know what the math program is like at Barry University, Nova Southeastern, or FAU?
I really want to stay in South Florida, I don't wanna be more than a few hours from home (West Palm), and I am a math major. Does anyone know what the math program is like at any of these schools? or any other schools in the area with a good math program?
I'm a transfer by the way, with my AA.
Thanks to anyone who can help :)

Math is a powerful skill to have. I love math and took 9 semesters of calculus - 4 in graduate school. I would recommend applying your knowledge to computer programming, algorithms, and perhaps some research in artificial intelligence. The demand is high. Barry has a math major program with a concentration in computer science. In terms of work-related value, the program at Barry seems good.

Miami and FAU seem too academic at the undergraduate level. Nova has only a math minor. For graduate school you can go to FAU. They have a large computer engineering research center that is juxtaposed with many local companies. I would recommend computer engineering or applied math with programming. Or you could go as an undergraduate and choose a major in computer engineering and minor in mathematics.

You definitely should combine math with programming though. I took engineering courses that use numerical methods, linear algebra, and partial differential equations with Matlab or C++. A math major would be great for that. The FAU math department seems too academic at the undergraduate level and may not get you a job. But the program at Barry seems more realistic for a job. However, a computer engineering major at FAU with a minor in math should be in high demand. Miami has an applied math program in graduate school.

I work in South FL and found many job opportunities at dice.com. Most of them are in information technology. I work with medical devices and software. The lifestyle in South FL is great. I am going to the FSU-Miami game and want to watch some HS football as well (St. Thomas Aquinas, Miami Northwestern, etc). I want to find a good running trail in the area. I saw one at Key Biscayne near the beaches. South FL has been magnified in the media since the 80s for its glamour. It's still like that. I was an 80s teen guy and often watched this show when I was in Arizona - my home state. I'm now a Floridian.

I like Will Smith's take.

Not to veer from my roots in math, this movie defines my identity long ago as an 80s teen - "Stand and Deliver." It's a film about impoverished Mexican teens in a troubled neighborhood of East LA who pass the AP calculus exam against all odds. I took that test too. It was easy. I was born on a reservation with many socioeconomic problems ,but math was my route to college and a great career in biomedical engineering.

The 80s teens have grown up, and Jeffrey Donovan does a good job of representing Generation X in South FL.

Hi lisa, I would like to know how your move to Florida from NJ is going. I'm very homesick myself because I just made the same exact move. I'm 21. Please email me, I would love to hear how you've been handling it. Thank you
