good SHTF scenario guns?

im on a tight budget and am looking for a good and very cheap rifle. good for all scenarios. hunting/self-defense/ etc long range (besides the mosin nagant). also a good and reliable sidearm recommendation. both being able to be fired often without need for repairs or cleaning.

First you will want something common and pedestrian, so you can find ammo for it. A gun you can't feed is useless... For a handgun I'd choose something such as 9mm Luger, or .357 Magnum (which will also handle .38 Spec.)....and .223/5.56mm NATO, or 7.62X39 in a rifle...... These are common, easily found rounds that you can trade for or even pick up from fallen enemies.

As to a tight budget, there are still alot of SKS rifles out there for around 300 bucks...and that 7.62X39 cartridge has been taking people down for alot of years in AK and SKS type rifles, and is still common, easy to find, and fairly cheap... And being almost identical ballistically, to the .30-30 Win., it will handle any deer or game you wish to hunt...particularly with soft point ammo.

I can't really see where "long range" would be necessary in a SHTF scenario... You would not want to hunt at long range...and if the "enemy" is that far away your best, smartest course of action is to just slip away and avoid an unnecessary gun fight.

A WASR 10. It's pretty cheap, but decent. It's an AKM, which means it'll be reliable and durable. It won't shoot that well past 100-150 yards (how well you shoot also factors in), but within that range, you'll be able to take deer. As I said, these guns are reliable and durable, so if you miss a cleaning, don't worry.

A Marlin 60 is a great 22. The gun is cheap and the ammo is cheap. It's not going to make a good self defense gun, but it will be a good gun for squirrels and rabbits. If SHTF, you'll need to hunt for food. Which do you think you'll have better luck finding? A squirrel or a rabbit, or a deer? You will need to clean it often, though.

For a sidearm, you'll want a Glock. They're affordable and VERY reliable and VERY durable. What caliber are you looking for? A 45ACP is a great self defense round, but the ammo is not so cheap. A 9mm is a cheaper round, but it's not the best self defense round. I suggest that you try the Glock 19 and the Glock 21 to see which one suits you.

You won't find one rifle that suits all of your needs, at least not one that is very cheap.

Think about what happens when SHTF. In Katrina, police and NG went door to door confiscating firearms. Not really the time to be packing a rifle and LBV like so many "preppers" think they'll be doing.

If you need something for self-defense, get a pistol and a CCL before anything else. Pistols are compact, easy to conceal, and go pretty much everywhere with you without leaving a big footprint. You also won't be out a lot of cash if you need to ditch it/cache it/trade it/whatever.

If you're on a budget, save up. "Good" and "cheap" usually don't go together when talking about quality. "Cheap" is a compromise on quality. You don't need to drop $2,000 on a custom 1911, but $500-600 on a Glock or XD is the least you should be looking for. Don't go cheap when you're looking for something to stake your life on.

Also, don't buy into the "doesn't need repairs or cleaning" meme. Pvt Murphy shows up for everything, including AK's and Glocks. Parts break, fouling jams weapons, and the only thing you can do about it is maintenance. You can clean a pistol in about five minutes with motor oil and a rag, so it's not like cleaning supplies are hard to find. Pretty much all modern pistols are reliable enough for self defense/survival uses, so take your pick.

In all honesty a good .22 lr. I'll get thumbs down from some but these same folks can't show where I'm wrong. Avoid the Mosin Nagants at all cost as they're trash, if you feel you need a center fire rifle look for a good used .223 or .308 since these are the current military calibers and there is a great selection of ammunition for them.

Fire often and not clean? That will pretty much be any firearm that you decide not to clean, until it stops firing properly. But then it comes to SHTF, you will shoot only when you need to and clean and check your weapons OFTEN. And you will want to have a supply of spare parts, even if you never need them in case of a true SHTF situation that lasts for months, and the local places that have what you need, either sell out or raise their price or barter/trade value so high that you don't have anything worth what they are asking for it.

And of course you will need to know how to make repairs, no matter what you own, as Mr Murphy, likes to rear his ugly head as often as possible when things are going bad, and loves making them worse.

    Change your thinking skippy..........

1st and foremost you are going to need an easily concealed firearm that uses common ammunition..... Think 9MM or .45 ACP semi-auto or a .357 revolver..... I don't even want to waste time suggesting whats a good pistol... You do the homework - BUT make sure its a gun that uses common ammunition and order ammo in bulk NOW!.......

Even in a collapsed economy your not going to be walking around with an AK or an AR15.... People will still go to work and need stuff and you aren't going to be doing the same riding the bus to the dentist office with an assault rifle on you..... When out and around you WILL meet those that will want to rob, beat, assault, rape or otherwise violate your person.... That's why I highly recommend a pistol, easily concealable with lots of ammo at home for it......

Wasr 10 ( akm) and Glock 21. Both not very expensive and good guns. Good combo for $1000 I'd say. A durable 7.62 rifle and 230 gr. 45 pistol.

    So lets summarize your specifications:

    + Very cheap: < $400

+ Hunting: Can take any animal in North America

+ Self Defense: Suitable for CQC

+ Long Range: Scoped, chambered, and accuracy for 800 meters

    + Never Fails

+ Does not need normal cleaning and maintenance.

Solution. Start with a 12 gauge shotgun and kill everyone with a better weapon than yours and and take it from them.

  • Mossberg 500 12 gauge or a Saiga 7.62x39 would work.

For handgun,my vote goes for the Ruger P95
