Is $50,000 a good salary for a consultant in DC?
I just got promoted at my job in DC to a consultant (which I'm very happy about). However, my boss just handed me a contract to sign for $50,000 a year. This seems a little low to me, especially because I'll be required to work 50 hours a week and travel to some dangerous countries. I was thinking I should be making something in the $70,000 range...
Am I asking too much, or is my boss trying to lowball me? What can I do about it?

Is this your first job in consulting? If so, expect to be paid far below the average wage. Because your boss is giving you a chance at this new job, they hedge their bets and pay you less in case you don't cut it. This happens in every industry.
YES- you are expected to negotiate pay and benefits. But honestly, asking for $70k when they offered $50k is just ridiculous. That's not even on the same page.
Let's try some math:
What you made before the promotion x 1.5 = Absolute top end of what you ask for. Expecting a bigger raise, even if you do change positions is just not going to happen.
What they offered x 1.25 = A good place to expect your negotiation to start

Not much since you have already accepted the job. Try to ask for a raise later when you have passed probation.
