Can having a bad employment history prevent you from getting a secret clearance?

In the pass 3 years I had 8 jobs. 3 out of 8 I was fired from. The 3 jobs that I was fired from was from bad driving. I also had a lot of gaps in my employment history where for most part I really did not stay long with each employer. I never had a crime. The only violation I ever had was 4 parking tickets but I paid all promptly. Also, I don't have bad credit.. I only have one credit card so I can build my credit history. What are my chances of getting a secret clearance in the Military?

There should not be too much problem as long as that's all there is although being fired from three out of eight jobs will raise some eyebrows depending on what those reasons where. If they were all delivery type jobs then being fired from them for bad driving might make some sense. If it was for other reasons also like theft or fighting then your general behavior at work would indicate some rashness and immaturity and depending on your age and when this all happened it could be a problem.

When they look at granting a clearance they look at things like your general behavior, credit history, work history, medical history, and criminal history (if any) and poor decisions by you that might indicate that they don't want to take a chance of trusting you or can't take a chance of trusting you. So bad driving and fired from three jobs makes me wonder what else there might be or if thats the only reason and does not make much sense in some ways. Also if you did these things as an adult then that works against you as well since adults are supposed to make inteligent, responsible decisions. Being fired from a job or two is really not that uncommon either in people's work history either in this day and age. If that's all there is and you have good references and have shown yourself to be a responsible, honest individual then you should be alright. But being fired from three jobs like that for the same reason will raise some red flags unless of course they were delivery type jobs. Don't lie about anything though or try to cover it up-just make sure everything else is good and you should be alright if that's all there is.

Your chances are fine don't worry a secret isn't much more then a back ground check. They give them out like candy in the Army. The only things that really can hold you back for a clearance are DUI or DWI and if you have a bunch of unpaid debts.

If you are in a job that does not have a secret security clearance requirement, then you have no chance of getting a clearance. Only people in positions that require security clearances get them, such as Military Police, Inteligence, JAG officers, etc. If you do not need a security clearance for your job, you will not get one.

If you do need a security clearance for your job, it might be possible. A recruiter will help you to determine if you would qualify for a security clearance.

a Secret Clearance is given out like candy. As long as you maintain good OPSEC principles you should be able to earn and maintain that level of clearance.

Greg is correct though. you won't get any kind of clearance up until it becomes necessary for your job.
