I'm spiritual, but not religious, but why is this?

Spiritualism involves introspection, and anything is possible with your mind. Lucid dreaming and astral projections or even smoking salvia can be considered a spiritual event since it's all about perception and your mind.

Religion is an outside thing, therefore it must fit into your reality and is something outside of your perception, it's basically believing in something that (in my opinion, and i'm sorry if it's offensive to anyone) is impossible. that's why it's called faith
