Is the two-party system really the source of our problems?
Everyone on Y!A Politics seems to lean one way or another, as do I. But increasingly, I am feeling like both A and B are terrible choices. Both parties do nothing but focus on relatively small constituencies that don't represent the vast majority of Americans. Yet we vote for one of them because we consider them the lesser of two evils. I saw a Q&A with some clown about the electoral college and he kept saying it needed to be set up to "protect the two-party system." What kind of BS is that, purposely rigging the system to keep out challengers?
I'm curious about others opinions...Are you really 100% behind Obama or Romney? Do you think a viable (not a wack-job) third party with a realistic platform would help the country? If so, how do you think that could come about?
btw, Y!A Politics is the only section that rocks and rolls on Saturday mornings. The other sections are a bunch of lame *** questions.

As a European having grown up i a country with a seven party system and now living in a country with a five party system, I can only say no. In an election year, whatever the system is, there's always so-called "pandering" to specific groups of voters + a run to the middle. A party always wants to win the largest possible number of voters, and as most of the voters in America and Europe have moderate/centrist opinions, the parties shape their opinions to appeal to these voters. Fact is, as long as most American are moderate democrats or republicans, this will be reflected in the parties.
As for the electoral college, that invention came about to protect the smaller states from being overrun by bigger states (as more people live in California than 8 smallest states combined).

it is not a query of whether a 2-occasion equipment isn't ordinary. it rather is. the difficulty is, the thank you to do you do away with that equipment? there is not any way you may legislate it away, whether Democrats and Republicans unexpectedly agreed to the belief. you could no longer end 2 events from having the main components and being able to garner the main votes as a results of being interior the process the aisle. you could no longer use the judiciary, they have little administration over elections, barring the 2000 determination in Bush v. Gore. there is not any actual source for replace different than the persons themselves, and enable's settle for it, there is not any longer that huge of a rigidity to alter it. How do you motivate certainly one of those massive distinction, and in case you may, are you able to assume that it will no longer replace genuine returned later? human beings like having 2 options, it makes issues less demanding, or perhaps a faux dichotomy merely feels genuine to many. there is not any longer lots to be carried out approximately it, undeniable and easy.

Gary Johnson is doing a remarkable job despite the Demopublican press keeping it down to only 35% of the people knowing he exists-polling at 6%. He would have a real shot at winning if he were treated fairly. Many people are brainwashed into thinking political rape and Fascism is OK today, and is a valid reason to not vote for freedom.
When Democpublicans tell you to get out and vote and you say your one vote won't decide a race so it does not matter, they insult the hell out of you. They argue to the end of the earth that your vote matters. Then you say you are voting for Gary Johnson they tell you your vote is completely worthless. What person with a brain is not going to see through all this?

That is why in America any party can get their candidate on the ballot
All they need to do is get enough signatures.
The other parties have a way of keeping the 2 main parties in line.

The source of our problems is that Big Banking Big Oil and the military industrial complex and the very wealthy have bought our government, reduced their taxes and passed bills that allowed banks to deal in credit derivatives and pass their bad mortgage debts off to other banking entities.
We don't need another round of tax cuts for the rich.
We need to reform social programs raise more IRS revenues and ease off on military spending.

“Perhaps a fall of personal despotism or of avaricious or tyrannical oppression may be accomplished by revolution, but never a true reform in ways of thinking. Rather, new prejudices will serve as well as old ones to harness the great unthinking masses.”
Nope everyone is just too stupid

Yes, I'm quite convinced that our coming to the two-party system is one of the final stages of representative democracy: Stagnation.

It has become that way.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Company Fire, 1911
"On Saturday March 25, 1911 disaster struck. As the women approached the end of their workday, a small fire started in the cutting room on the eighth floor. It was 4:30 in the afternoon. Within minutes, flames fueled by loose cloth lying in innumerable piles engulfed the area and spread to the floors above. Panic spread with the flames and smoke. The women madly dashed to the exits only to find them locked. They furiously pounded on the doors to no avail. The one fire escape at the rear of the building collapsed, killing many and cutting off that route of escape. Some attempted to slide down the elevator cables only to lose their grip and fall to their deaths. Others, their clothes afire, jumped in groups from the top of the building or from open windows on the lower floors.
"Firefighters arrived quickly but found their way to the building hindered by bodies lying in the street. Their ladders reached only to the sixth floor and their safety nets broke as they tried to catch groups of women jumping from the flaming building."

The Triangle Fire
By forcing U.S. workers to compete directly with foreign sweatshop workers, they are inevitably forcing U.S. workers back into the sweatshops here in the USA.
The wealthy always want sweatshops. They have them in the developing nations today. They had them 100 years ago in the USA. Now they want their sweatshops back here in the USA.
Democrats and Republicans are working together to do the bidding of the ultra wealthy power elite, using mass unemployment to force U.S. born workers back into the sweatshops. They are using free trade to send jobs out of the country, and they are using H1B visas and illegal immigrant workers to soak up jobs here in this country, all to create a scarcity of jobs for U.S. born workers.
Democrats and Republicans put on a public display of fighting over things, so they can set us to fighting amongst ourselves. Then while we're occupied with issues like flag burning, abortion, and the debt ceiling, the politicians meet in secret to conspire against us behind our backs.

3rd Party candidates are either conservative or liberal as well. That's why I'll never understand this propensity some people have to vote for one of them. All it does is put the opposite philosophy in office.
