raw feeding question?

In a month I will be traveling by plane across country to an agility competition. The problem is, I feed raw. I figure about 10 to 12 hours from home to hotel. How do I transport her food without it defrosting? I will not have transportation once at the hotel as it is across the street from the competition site. For the 4 days I will only need 1 patty. (She is a very small dog). Any suggestions?

Update:

Jesse. It is Florida that we are going to. We are invited to the agility invitationals. I cannot take a carry on as my dog will be the carry on. And I don't have a lot of space in my suitcase as I will also need to pack her x pen in and blankets and pad as well as my own clothes. Yes kibble is so much easier. But changing food this close to competition is a bit scary.

What about getting a small package of freeze dried raw? I use it when we go to the cottage in the summer and it works well for my dogs, although it's expensive to feed it to large dogs for a tiny dog it would be cheap.

Nature's Variety Instinct is the one I use but I know there's others out there as well.

Purchase your food in Florida. It is usually best not to feed a dog undergoing the stress of airplane travel. It's no fun to deal with a dog vomiting on a plane. Once you get to the hotel, walk to a grocery store and buy a meat your dog is used to eating, or order plain cooked meat from the hotel restaurant. 4 days of a simple diet will not harm her (unless there is a medical concern).

If you are using a store bought brand of raw, switch to the freeze dried form of it. You can even mail the freeze dried food to the hotel so it is waiting for you and you don't have to take it on the plane (make sure you let the hotel know).

Otherwise, start getting her used to a kibble now so you can just pack 4 days worth with you.

I studied the more than a few methods of raw feeding after my Vet encouraged it. It is surprising what number of special methods there are however the variations are regularly how the meat is prepared if at all and whether you include greens and fruit. I seemed at the Barf weight-reduction plan however decided that the veggies weren't particularly fundamental. In the event that they have got to be pureed to collapse the cells so the dog can digest them, it suggests that it is now not a average food for a dog! I feel persons who've under no circumstances used raw foods read the pet meals enterprise sponsored websites who nonetheless spout the ancient myths! It does not take so much to fully grasp that the companies are perpetually going to take a look at to position folks off utilizing a uncooked food regimen! Even those businesses which have a variety of 'common' meals for pets will spout the parable of bones being damaging if given entire! They then inform you that they use ground up bones to furnish the calcium content material and so forth! The businesses need us to continue buying their products and normally have! They are not going to confess that their merchandise are unhealthy for the animals or that they need to use extra vitamins and minerals because the little meat they use and the fillers of cereal and greens doesn't contain the proper quantities! If humans don't need to feed uncooked or even keep in mind it i don't even realise why they read the question, much much less reply it! Maybe they will have to realise that commercially prepared meals are fairly new as far as the history of dogs go!

I haven't flown in a long time. Will they let you bring a small cooler as a carry on? ARE there coolers that small? Maybe one that would fit in a backpack? What about an insulated lunchbox?

We're driving from Washington to Florida in a few months and we're putting our big cooler on the back seat. With kibble it was never this difficult! Hahaha. I hope you figure something out. And best of luck in your agility competition!

Idk if your dogs carry on bag has a side pouch but mine does and you could always stick it in a small ziplock bag and then tape an ice pack around it and it should be fine. You can even get the insulated bags at Walmart and put an ice pack in there taped with the patty and stick it in a side bag. We did this on our way home from Cali awhile ago and it was fine. We drove and it was a 15 hr drive for us. An ice crest or cooler is going to take up to much room so that's why I would just tape it to an icepack and it will be much smaller. Good luck and have fun at the dog show!

You might consider a dehydrated option. Sojos and Honest Kitchen are a couple brands. They are expensive but super convenient for travel. Just add water, let soak, and serve! You may want to consider buying bottled water to use in Florida if your dog is sensitive.

The food and water could be checked so you wouldn't have to worry about shopping when you got there.

If you can afford to go 10 hours from home by plane to show a dog, surely you can afford a taxi to a local pet food store during the four days that you are there. There may even be food vendors at the show that you could contact in advance to find out where your food is being sold in the area. Or you could call the manufacturer of your food or look on the web to find out distributors of the product locally. In a town big enough to have a dog show that is of national interest, surely there are other owners feeding their dog this product there. Alternatively, you could have your distributor of the food deliver it to your hotel by overnight delivery if they ship to that area.

Barring that, call the airline and ask if you can ship a cooler with the frozen food and ice packs in it, and find out how much that costs. However, shipping of raw animal products interstate is regulated by a lot of agencies due to disease control efforts, and you could get in a heap of trouble or have your cooler confiscated from you at the airport unless you complete the correct paperwork.

If you cannot find a place near the hotel that carries your food or have the distributor ship some to you, I would start now teaching my dog to eat other food types as well. You are likely going to run into this problem again while you are showing the dog, and its good to have the animal be versatile in its eating habits anyway to decrease the likelihood of digestive problems if you are in a situation where you just cannot obtain this food or keep it in a hygienic manner. Good luck.
