Recommend a good motor oil for my new Civic?

My dad says I don't need synthetic because Civics are known to go 300K miles on dino oil.

What dino oil should I use? Calls for 5W20.

Do not use synthetic oil unless recommended by manufacturer. To do so can cause oil leaks. Sealants and gaskets have different pressure tolerances and the thickness of oil helps to maintain that seal. Synthetic oil remains thin so that engines can turn over easily when the weather gets cold. Smaller less powerful cars benefit most from them if tolerances for them are part of the cars makeup. Use what is recommended otherwise you are wasting money on something that is not needed.

Your dad is WRONG, but that's OK! As far as I have read, 0W-20 or 5W-20 oils ARE synthetic. THEREFORE use MOBIL ONE or PENNZOIL which are easiest to find. I would NOT use VALVOLINE for many reasons, but READ your manual first about OIL SPEC NUMBERS, and HONDA has it's VERY OWN ENGINE OIL at the dealership made by ENEOS, I think. NO newer engine can use DINO oil. OLDER hondas were MUCH simpler. the NEWER ones have multi valve technology and ONLY synth can be used in them. gOOD LUCK!!

Read and follow your owners manual recommendations. If they say 5/20, then use it. Personally I'd go for synthetic because I believe it's a better product, but engine oil debates seem to get started with the slightest spark and turn into long boring wildfires so do what you're comfortable with.

If I owned a brand new four cylinder high temperature high RPM motor, it would be getting Mobil1 which is the only full synthetic oil new car manufacturers leave the factory with.
