How well do 6 year olds remember things?

My older brother's fiancee has two boys from a previous relationship and the older one is Six and the younger one is four. Recently when they have came over the six year old has been remembering certain things I have said. For example, I have a PS3 and they like playing it and I tell them they can play it a week before they come over and the six year old will remember what I said. I kinda thought little kids didnt have a good memory and that their minds were on like autopilot or something until they're older like 9 or something. How is this?

Oh dear no! My son is 3 and he has an excellent memory. Especially when it involves a promise made to use a certain toy or play a certain game!

nah, they are all there from about 1 onward and maybe even a little bit before that. now they might not remember being 6 so clearly when they are 60 but they have normal memory when it comes to stuff like everyone else. you might remember something said to you a month ago, children are no different.

also just so you know, kids also often understand more about the world that some adults give them credit for. as a child i was told by an adult that hitting children was ok because children don't have emotions. sad to say she wasn't joking. i ran into this sort of opinion on and off and never understood how these people got to this conclusion since they had to be children once too.

being a child sucks in many ways because it wasn't until recent decades that children even had basic human rights. there were more laws about abusing animals than children.

I remember certain things from when I was three years old, and EVERYTHING from four and up. Long term memory doesn't kick in until ages 3-6, and apparently your 6 year old friend's long term memory has kicked in already.

Psychologists found that children under 10th do have good memories but due to high imagination activity they tend to fabricate their memories. I have memories from being 4 so we do remember things

Your assumptions were wrong. If it's makes an impression, they will remember, and make sure you remember, too. The PS3 is clearly important to the 6 year old.
