School employee contracts-same pay, extended work hours-is this legal?
Our Headstart preschool program is wanting workers to work year round, same pay except they're now going to be required to work in the summertime also. Is this legal? Please send any links you can find, or the proper working to search for legal cases. Arkansas is the state. They'll get some additional time off in the school year, but overall, I don't think it's a good idea for our workers.

Are the workers getting paid by the year, or by the hour, or what? If the workers are getting paid $8 an hour, then that's completely legal and fair. However, if the program has been paying a flat salary per year, and now they want the workers to put in more hours for the same flat salary, that might be illegal, depending on whether the pay per hour falls below the minimum wage.
As long as the pay offered is minimum wage or above, it's legal for a company to make a new contract for workers, offering less pay per hour. And it's legal for the workers to say that they are not interested in the new, lower pay rate.
You might want to talk this over with other workers and see how they feel, if you want to try to negotiate for better pay and/or better benefits. It's far more effective to negotiate as a group rather than as individuals.

Wow. Yeah I don't think that's a good idea for your workers: if you're going to be working an extra 3 months you ought to get compensated for all that extra work. However, it's certainly a legal contract to be offering, I'm not sure why you might think it would be illegal.
