Is the Mosin-Nagant a junky rifle?

I guess one way to put it is: If you were taking a bolt-action rifle into battle, would you trust the Mosin to work and get the job done?

I know that the reason that they're so cheap is because there's over nine thousand of them, but is it also because they're junky guns? Or not?

The reason I ask is because I'm a dumbarse and already made the mistake of wasting my money on a Remington 770, I don't want to make that mistake again and end up buying another POFS.

Update:

Well excuse me mister high and mighty (Bytmey).

Update 2:

I used the phrase "over nine thousand" as a joke, seeing that it's a relatively well-known meme. Trust me when I say that I know that there's far more than a four digit number.

1, hell yes they will get the job done. reliable, simple, powerful, accurate. built like a tank.

2, you're off by a few zeros... there's 36,000,000 of them. they're cheap not because there's 36,000,000 of them but also the soviets expected global thermonuclear war to be a serious threat and rounded up all the Mosins they could find after WW2, refurbished them and put them in warehouses, so after Russia and america's been turned into a radioactive wasteland they can arm the survivors and continue the war!

based on the laws of supply and demand, if you show up with 36 million guns that's all more or less brand new condition and they're all surplus rifle, you're really not gonna get much for them!

it's like how Kalashnikov is going under because the world is flooded with the older AK47, AKM and AK74. there's so many the true capitalist unrestricted market price is about 25 bucks new and 6 bucks used.

trivia: on average a Mosin Nagant 91/30 is sold to a US importer for $10. why are they $100 by the time they get to you? 50% of it is taxes, 20% is more taxes, 30% is dealer cost of shipping, storage, inventory and sale.

    I bought a Mosin a while back.

They are cheap because there are so many of them. The first time I took mine shooting I got about a 1 inch 3-shot group at 50 yards and shooting for speed got another group that I could cover with my knuckles at the same distance. The trigger on mine is better than the one on my 770 and the rifle is VERY easy to clean and disassemble. It is also well known for it's extreme durability and reliability.

I took mine deer hunting this year, and would trust it to do anything I could ask a bolt gun to do.

Edit: Oh, and there is also a lot of info online to help make sure you select a quality Mosin.

I have over 20 Mosin Nagants and haven`t picked a piece of junk yet. Only two have come close to closing on a Forster no go gauge , but check good with the field gauge. Only one has a bore larger than I desire, but it was bought to be a collector piece because of 1933 date- all numbers match TWO digit original serial number, and a real dilly at that.

I would trust any one of them to fire and they are hand picked of course from a dealer that gets nice stuff also. I have seen junk and feel for those people that have gotten shafted through the sight unseen condition. Mine are nice ones.

Source(s): In response to your 9,000 figure...I have a M-91 Finnish 91/30 type that was one of less than 4,000. It is dated 1943 on Tikka barrel and octagonal receiver.
  • Absolutely, as long as you make sure to check that you don't get one with a pitted chamber or any other significant problems see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrQ8ssKgCEo

And clean it as soon as you are done shooting it (if you are using corrosive ammo, which all surplus ammo is).

    Also check out:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PQUDmINoPM

Only problem is, it is difficult to mount a traditional scope (you have to have the bolt bent and the receiver drilled and tapped for a scope), otherwise you can mount a pistol scope by altering the rear site (Contact me if you want more info on scope mounting).

Great gun, ammo is dirt cheap (880 rounds for $137.50 at sgammo.com, though they are closed until Jan. 1 though)

I love mine, and you have to invest time in cleaning the cosmoline off, cleaning the chamber if you have a sticky bolt (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLL20Oh4P8M), but it is a better gun in my opinion than the 770, and the action is way smoother. If you decide not to get the Mosin, get a Savage 110 or Marlin Xl7, they are better guns than the Remington 770.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 18 million Mosin rifles manufactured to date; and they are still being made in various countries. It is simplistic, reliable, long lived and as idiot proof as a rifle can be. At the time of their introduction to the Czar's army the average recruit could not read, write, bath, etc; in short, it was built to take a licking and keep on ticking (to coin a phrase). It something works in Siberia then it will work anywhere else.

They are very reliable. I would be confident that you could abuse one and it would still go bang. They are not good hunting rifles however. Accuracy tends to run from pretty good to horrible. The trigger pull is god awful and they are very very heavy. If you just want something to hold up under fire from plinking the mosin is a good choice. If you want a hunting rifle get something like a savage model 110 or stevens model 200 both are much much better hunting rifles.

    Short answer: Yup.

Longer answer: They're so cheap because they are one of the least desirable

WW I design, WW II surplus bolt action rifles.

About all that can be said for them is that they'll work dependably.

    Against them:

    * They use an old, uncommon low velocity cartridge.

    * They are awkward, and have an inconvenient safety.

    * You will find it hard to find good iron sights or a scope mount to fit them.

Absolutely not. A properly cleaned & maintained Mosin bests even many new rifles. It's the poor man's .30 caliber combat rifle.

They have got the job done for 85+ years and did you say 9000?, try closer millions! No they are not poorly made. they are some of the most accurate rifles ever made. cheap to buy, and cheap to shoot. your not wasting your money. however if you want somthing you can put a scope on and tacticalize, then there are better choises availible. but yes sir, I stand by my mosin.

i would trust my life with either one of my mosins. they always works and they made more like 9 million of them. i wont sell mine for nothing. as long as you get one in decent shape its a good gun, but if you get one thats its beat to death with no bore left you cant expect much from it, i wouldnt pay over $100 for one though, well maybe a little more right now because guns are all out of stock everywhere.
