What is an assault gun?
We are hearing and talking about assault weapons, assault rifles, and assault guns as if the terms are interchangeable. Are they?

Going by the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act which was passed by Congress in 1994, the following semi-automatic weapons can be classified as assault guns:
Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
Folding or telescoping stock
Pistol grip
Bayonet mount
Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
Grenade launcher (more precisely, a muzzle device that enables launching or firing rifle grenades, though this applies only to muzzle mounted grenade launchers and not those mounted externally).
Semi-automatic pistols with detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
Magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip
Threaded barrel to attach barrel extender, flash suppressor, handgrip, or suppressor
Barrel shroud that can be used as a hand-hold
Unloaded weight of 50 oz (1.4 kg) or more
A semi-automatic version of a fully automatic firearm.
Semi-automatic shotguns with two or more of the following:
Folding or telescoping stock
Pistol grip
Fixed capacity of more than 5 rounds
Detachable magazine.
Fully-automatic weapons were totally prohibited.

To liberals, they are. These are the people who believe semi auto weapons will fire as long as you hold the4 trigger down. The weapons targeted in their so=-called assault rifle ban are not assault rifles because they do not offer full auto fire fire, only semi auto, where you get one round each time you pull
the trigger., which is semi auto. The weapons they want banned are called black rifles because they resemble the full auto military versions, such as the semi auto only AR-15 is the civilian version of the M-16. Assault rifle is a term the liberal gun grabbers use to describe any weapon they don't like. it is a meaningless word outside the military or police equipment. The idiots who constantly whine about no one needing an assault rifle to hun t with are just lying, and they know it. Did you see deer or ducks or rabbits mentioned in the Second Amendment? No, because it is only about defense.

Assault = offensive rather than defensive capabilities.
@Mr.357, you could not be more wrong. The AR-15 which was used at Newtown was designed by ArmaLite as a weapon for the US military. They ran into financial problems and sold the design to Colt who produced it for the US military and called it the M-16. The only difference between the AR-15 and the M-16 is the full auto-fire option. The AR-15 was, is and always will be a military weapon.
@Starlord, you cannot be serious. Hunt with an AR-15? I have hunted all my life for all types of game and have never seen or even heard of someone using an AR-15 or similar type of rifle to hunt. They would have been asked to leave any hunting camp I have ever been to. I have never hunted with anyone who had more than 5 rounds in their gun. Hunters don't need 30 to 50 rounds and if they do they should find a new hobby.

To qualify as an assault weapon the firearm MUST possess these three characteristics;
1 Must be shorter and or lighter than a main battle rife.
2 MUST fire an intermediate cartridge.such as .223,7.62 X 39..30 carbine or 8mm kurze.May NOT fire a handgun cartridge such as .380 auto,
9mm or .45 APC.
3 MUST be capable of FULL AUTO fire.
If the weapon does not conform to all 3 above listed guidelines,it is NOT an assault weapon.
Liberals/delusional people brand any weapon for which they have a personal dislike an "assault weapon"in the hopes of frightening and misleading ignorant people.

I have no idea. An assault rifle is a military term for a rifle that is capable of full auto or select fire. It has been illegal to manufacture or import assault rifles for sale to civilians since May of 1986. An assault weapon is pretty much what ever gun banners want to define it as. Typically they are just rifles that look like military rifles or scary looking rifles that make liberals p*** their panties.

Assault rifles are high powered rifles capable of firing around 30-40 bullets in around 4 seconds. mainly used by the military.
