Should I ask the doctors to remove the metal plate in my upper arm?

In August 2011, I broke my upper arm in a car crash. I had surgery about a week later and the doctors put a metal plate on my humerus.

I haven't had many problems over the past year and a half but I'm wondering if I should ask the doctors to remove the plate. It would require another big surgery but I've heard that it's not smart to keep metal in your body for a long time.

I'm currently 17 years old.

the plate in your arm stays until it becomes a problem for you....the docs will NOT risk you going through surgery to remove a part that has no problems @ this point...besides the risk of going under, the surgical complications that may arise, & also the fact that taking this out may just cause problems with the bone they are taking it out of, makes this an unnecessary, invasive procedure that they will not go through unless required...your insurance will not pay for it either unless it's 'medically necessary' to be taken out....

My father was taken into hospital in the 1970's where, among other things, he had an x-ray. The doctor asked him why he had so many pieces of metal in his head. On replying that he had been shot in the face during the 14-18 war, and asking what the doctor proposed to do the answer was "Nothing, if they have been there that long without causing any trouble they can stay there". Bearing in mind these were bits of shrapnel and not the stainless steel your plate is made of I don't think it should be a worry to leave it there.

The absolute best thing to do in this situation is to do some real life research into the pros and cons of having metal body parts. Ask your doctor for advice, and if you think he or she doesn't know what they're doing, go to another doctor and ask for a second opinion.

I think you should deffinatly keep the metal plate. I personally think thats a cool thing to have in your arm. Ive got a friend whos got a metal leg and he loves it. He said hes glad hes got it. I think you should start to think of it as an asset to your body and be happy about it.
