Why do I always get reflux and heartburn when I have a chest cold?

Can a cold in the trachea affect the esophagus as well or something? I know that reflux can cause aspiration which can cause chest infections. However whenever I have a chesty cough I always get reflux. Sometimes I get the cough first and then the reflux comes later. The weather has been very cold this week and I think thats how I caught a cold. However I am now having reflux where I have mini-vomits in the back of my throat all the time. What is the cause of it?

Update:

I have been prone to heartburn as long as I can remember. I get it often - especially when I rush food, but much more often when I have a mucous chest.

Update 2:

Did not know if I would get a thoughtful answer to this question so thank you RN. :) I hear you about not eating and drinking before I go to sleep. If I have been drinking alcohol, I do have to sit up for a couple of hours, drink some water or coffee and take an antacid, and become sobre before I lie down and try to sleep, because sometimes I've aspirated when lying down after drinking alcohol.

Hello Robert...in response to your question, two problems come to mind. Coughing causes an increase in pressure within the abdomen. This can cause a backflow of stomach contents past the pyloric valve and up the esophagus. In addition when you have a cold you tend to swallow an excess of mucus. The excess mucus can build up in the stomach and cause vomtting. Either way you should not allow this to continue as it will erode the lining of your digestive tract as well as your pharynx, mouth and sinuses. Try taking acid suppressing medications while you have a cough (ie pepcid or zantec), and try not to cough while lyng down. If you can sleep sitting up in an easy chair that might help....and dont go to bed after you have just finished eating or drnking.

I have found that a lot of problems like this go to a muscle under your chin/tongue. When it is tight it narrows the passageway in your throat. when you drink something cold it wants to get even smaller so a pain might go in like that. this muscle has some endings in your chest area so that is why I go there. Here is how you can release that muscle: Under your chin: Place your thumbs up under your chin near the front. Feel the muscle between them for as tight as it can be. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. When the muscle starts to release, slowly look upward until your neck is fully extended. Then release the pressure but hold your head there for one minute longer.
